Theodor Haecker Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Theodor Haecker Prize has been awarded by the city of Esslingen am Neckar every two years since 1995 and every three years since 2017 to people who are characterized by “special political courage and sincerity”. It is named after the German writer Theodor Haecker and is currently endowed with € 10,000.

The prize has so far been awarded to the following people:

On the basis of the 2011 award to Shiva Nazar Ahari, the Esslingen municipal council unanimously passed a resolution on the following day in which it asked the German government to influence the Iranian government to suspend the imminent punishment for Ahari - 74 lashes and 4 years in prison. Ahari could not accept the human rights award in person.

In addition to the main prize, a person or a group can be awarded the “Theodor Haecker Gift of Honor”. So far, these have mostly been scientists or private individuals who have made a contribution to researching the life and work of Theodor Haecker. For the first time as a group, the SV Babelsberg 03 fan project was given the honorary gift in 2007 . The reason given was the outstanding example of successful work with young people against violence, racism and neo-Nazi tendencies. Further award winners were the youth theater Stage Divers (e), the local club of Soroptimist International , and Heroes (projects for violence prevention) . In 2001 a schoolgirl received the gift of honor for her story about the deportation of a Jewish girl to a concentration camp.
