Tony Tan Keng Yam (born February 7, 1940 in Singapore ) is a Singaporean politician and was President of the city-state from September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2017.

Life

Tan studied economics and mathematics at the National University of Singapore , the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Adelaide .

From February 11, 1979 to September 3, 1988 Tan was a member of the Singapore Parliament . From 1983 to 1985 he was Minister of Finance and then Minister of Education in Singapore until 1991. In 1995 Tan was appointed Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister, a position he held until 2005. He was also the country's defense minister from 1995 to 2003. Tony Tan was a member of the People's Action Party , but resigned from the ruling party in June 2011 as part of his presidential candidacy.

Until July 1, 2011, Tan was chairman of the Singapore state-owned Government of Singapore Investment Corporation and the state-owned media company Singapore Press . Tan won the presidential election at the end of August 2011 and has been President of Singapore since September 1, 2011. He succeeded Sellapan Ramanathan , who had held the office for 12 years.

Tony Tan has been married to Mary Chee Bee Kiang since 1964 and has four children.
