Ong Teng Cheong

Ong Teng Cheong , GCMG ( chin.王鼎昌, Wáng Dǐngchāng ) (born January 22, 1936 in Singapore ; † February 8, 2002 ibid) was the fifth president of the city-state of Singapore from September 2, 1993 to September 1, 1999.

Before 1993, the presidents were determined by parliament. Ong's successor, SR Nathan, on the other hand, was twice proclaimed president without an election because all opposing candidates were disqualified. Ong Teng Cheong was the first elected President of Singapore since independence in 1965.
