Weggis is located in a bulge named after him ( Rigi Bay) of Lake Lucerne at the southwestern foot of the Rigi . The place has an extremely mild climate and is known for the thriving of numerous southern plants (including chestnut trees, palms, grapes and orchids).

The village of Weggis is located on a south-facing plain on the shores of Lake Lucerne. In the past it only consisted of the two districts of Unterdorf in the west and Oberdorf to the east. Due to the brisk construction activity due to the location, the districts Hinterdorf (east of Oberdorf), Rain and Laugneri (near Hinterdorf), Baumen and Dörfli near Unterdorf - as well as Tischital and Rigiblick on the slope above the Oberdorf have emerged. Right in the southwest corner, a peninsula, is the district of Hertenstein LU (2.3 km southwest of the village; on the lake shore). At the municipal boundary to Vitznau , 1.9 km southeast of the village, another district has emerged. From the lakeshore at 436  m above sea level. M. up to a height of 794  m above sea level. M. different hamlets have grown together. These are: Riedsort (on the lakeshore), Bannholz ( 667  m above sea level ), Bodenberg ( 642  m above sea level ) and Sentiberg ( 794  m above sea level ). Far up on the slope, accessible by cable car and rack railway, is the Rigi Kaltbad district (2.8 km northeast; 1438  m above sea level to 1471  m above sea level ). Many other groups of houses and individual farmsteads belong to the community.

With the exception of the Herrenwald north of Hertenstein, the west and the center of the community are forestless. The situation is different on the Rigihang east of the Hinterdorf, this part of the municipality is heavily covered by forest. Larger forest areas are the Kirchenwald on the slope northeast of the Hinterdorf, through which the Kienbach flows to Lake Lucerne, and the Lützelauerwald on the eastern border of the municipality.

The municipality boundary goes from Lake Lucerne west of Unterwilen (municipality of Vitznau) to the north, 1000 meters upwards to Rigi-First (in the canton of Schwyz ). And from there in a north-westerly direction north past Rigi Kaltbad to Rotstock ( 1659  m above sea level ). Then it turns to the west and comes back to Lake Lucerne south of Greppen . Weggis borders on Küssnacht SZ and Greppen in the north, on Arth in the canton of Schwyz in the northeast, on Vitznau in the east and southeast and on Lake Lucerne.

Of the municipal area of 1,182 hectares (excluding Seanteil), 46.0% is agricultural land. Almost as much - 38.7% - is covered by forest and wood and 14.0% is settlement area.

population

Between 1798 and 1850 the population increased sharply (1798-1850: +46.3%). From 1850 to 1880, with the exception of 1870, the number of inhabitants remained constant. Thereafter, until 1970, interrupted by two phases of stagnation (1930–1941 and 1950–1960), the number of residents continued to grow (1880–1970: +94.5%). The main reason for this was tourism, on which the population development was heavily dependent. In these 90 years the population has almost doubled. The 1970s brought a setback (1970–1980: −6.0%). Since then, the population has grown very rapidly due to the good location and the hotel management schools with their large number of students (1980–2010: +79.1%). In 1991 the number of residents exceeded 3,000 and in 2007 it had already exceeded 4,000. Population growth has slowed since 2010.

The dialect of Weggis differs greatly from that in the city of Lucerne and is similar to that of the canton of Schwyz (examples "I go" / city of Lucerne: ech goh ; canton of Schwyz and Weggis: I gah ; "new" / city of Lucerne: nöi ; canton Schwyz and Weggis: nüü ). Origin - nationality

At the end of 2017, the community had 4,404 inhabitants. Of these, 3,371 were Swiss citizens and 1,033 (= 23.46%) were people of other nationalities. The largest groups of immigrants come from Germany (366 people), Portugal (138), India (84), Vietnam (40), Hungary (39), Spain (35), Italy (34), Austria (31), Slovakia (29 ) and Kosovo (24 people). The comparatively high number of Indians and Vietnamese are almost entirely students of a hotel management school.

history

Around 800 the Pfäfers Monastery (SG) acquired the Wattawis farm. The community had been settled for a long time at that time. The community name comes from the Celtic and means "place of the ferrymen". The first written mention of Weggis under his Latin name Guategisso comes from the year 1116, when Pope Paschalis II confirmed his ownership rights to the Pfäfers monastery. The freedom-loving residents were for some time under the rule of the Habsburgs . The Lords of Hertenstein exercised the regency for both the monastery brothers and the Habsburgs. But as early as 1332 Weggis and Gersau became Free Republics and allies of the neighboring original Swiss. This was confirmed in a federal letter from the Confederates in 1359. Nevertheless, the Lords of Hertenstein sold their rights to the city of Lucerne in 1380. These administrated Weggis until 1798 as part of the Landvogtei Weggis. The Weggis defended themselves against the lords of Lucerne in several uprisings until 1588. In the Peasants' War of 1653, they once stood on the side of the rule of Lucerne. The community belonged to the district of Lucerne from 1798 to 1803, then to the newly created office of Lucerne . In 1798 the district of Vitznau was separated from Weggis and became an independent municipality. The merger project of the three Lucerne Rigi communities Weggis, Vitznau and Greppen was suspended for an indefinite period in 2005.
