Greppen

Greppen is a municipality in the Lucerne-Land constituency in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland .

This exclave , consisting of the three lakeside communities of Greppen, Weggis and Vitznau , is separated from the rest of the administrative area by Lake Lucerne .

geography

Greppen is located on Lake Lucerne , on the eastern bank of the Küssnachter Arm at the foot of the Rigi . Greppen extends from Lake Lucerne to the western slope of the Rigi to below Rigi-Staffel ( 1400  m above sea level ). There are only 330 hectares of land in the municipality, the rest is part of the lake. Of the land area, 50.9% is used for agriculture, 39.7% is forest and wood and only 9.4% is settlement area. The Breitenacherried area is under nature protection.

The community stretches along the Rigifuss along the road from Küssnacht towards Schwyz, gradually rising. Many new access roads gradually sprawl the local agricultural areas and slopes.

Greppen borders on Weggis and Küssnacht in the canton of Schwyz . Indirectly, in the lake, also on Meggen . The place benefits from its location in the triangle of the neighboring cantons of Lucerne and its proximity to Zug and Zurich .

politics

Municipal council

The Greppen municipal council consists of five part-time members and is set up as follows:

  • Claudia Bernasconi ( CVP ): Mayor; Presidential Department
  • Franz Gisler ( SVP ): Mayor; Infrastructure department
  • Roger Augsburger (IGG): Social Affairs
  • Markus Kron (CVP): Finance and Tax Department
  • Silvio Rapelli (IGG): Education department

Cantonal elections

In the 2015 cantonal elections for the Canton of Lucerne, the share of the vote in Greppen was: SVP 30.9%, CVP 30.0%, FDP 18.8%, glp 8.3%, SP 5.9%, GPS 4.9%.

National Council elections

In the 2015 Swiss parliamentary elections, the share of the vote in Greppen was: SVP 30.4%, CVP 20.0%, FDP 19.1%, SP 9.9%, glp 9.4%, GPS 5.6%, BDP 1, 0%.

Fusion project of the Lucerne Rigi communities

The three Lucerne Rigi communities of Greppen, Weggis and Vitznau have loosely examined a merger in the past, as they are already working together on many issues. The merger project (possibly under the name of the municipality of Rigi) was postponed indefinitely in 2005 because all three municipalities are financially sound and therefore there is no immediate need for action.

economy

The people of Greppen found their livelihood early on in various professions. Traditionally, livestock and alpine farming and fishing dominated - but chestnut groves were also grown in Greppen (mild climate) and tufa mined. Today there are still 17 farms. Nevertheless, the number of people working in agriculture and fishing is at (2000) 32.9%, well above average. 32.4% find their livelihood in industry and trade; in service occupations 34.7%. The silk and linen weaving that was widespread in the 19th century has disappeared. Larger employers are companies in the catering industry, (moderate) tourism, a sawmill , the pharmaceutical and construction industries. The commuter balance speaks a clear picture. There are 40 commuters (as of 2000) compared to 280 commuters (out of a total of 421 employees) (26.8% to the canton of Schwyz, 20.7% to the canton of Zug, 12.9% to Lucerne and 11.4% to the neighboring municipality of Weggis ).

tourism

Since various projects such as the routing of the Lake Zurich – Gotthard Railway along the Rigi and the construction of a railway from Greppen to the Rigi came to nothing, tourism in Greppen is not as important as in nearby communities.

traffic

Greppen has owned a ship station for the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company (SGV) since 1869 . It is on the Küssnacht-Hertenstein / Weggis-Lucerne course.

The SGV bus service from Küssnacht towards Weggis (–Gersau – Brunnen) started in 1932. The bus route Küssnacht (train station) –Weggis – Vitznau – Gersau – Brunnen (train station) is more important for public transport. The closest train station is in Küssnacht on the Lucerne – Arth-Goldau railway line , and Brunnen station on the Gotthard line .

The motorway connection to the A4 in Küssnacht, 5 km away , brought a further improvement in the transport system and a strong increase in population.

schools

There has been a village school in Greppen since 1809, which children attend from kindergarten to 6th primary school. From the 7th grade onwards, the children attend school in the neighboring village of Weggis (secondary) or the cantonal school in Lucerne and the grammar school in Immensee. School care president is (not on the municipal council) Roger Augsburger.

Attractions

Parish Church of St. Wendelin

In the 14th century St. Wendelin was worshiped . A village chapel St. Wendelin was built in 1483/85, which had to give way to the parish church of St. Wendelin in 1645/47. A pilgrimage to Greppen takes place on October 20th.

Due to the relatively intact village image of the Greppen town center (from the lake side over the Wendelinsmatte) it is still part of the inventory of places worth protecting .
