history

Contemporary prints from the battle near Gisikon on November 23, 1847. The covered wooden bridge in the background

Neither archaeological traces nor written evidence tell of the origin of Gisikon. The ending of the place name on -ikon suggests Alemannic conquest of the 6th to 8th centuries. The name probably goes back to a settler named Gising. The oldest surviving mention of Gisikon dates back to 1270. Soon afterwards, the place came under the rule of the Habsburgs . Until it was sold by the von Moos family to the city of Lucerne in 1422, it was a fiefdom of changing lords. In 1653, the place received tax privileges because, unlike most rural communities , it supported the lords of the city in the great peasants' war .

The Gisiker coat of arms has a golden bridge with two silver pillars, which is placed in a beam-wise manner. So it represents the bridge that played such an important role in history. Since 1426, the Lucerne Council advised on the question of building a bridge in Gisikon. In 1431 he decided to build a covered bridge over the Reuss with a new customs post . In addition, an inn to supply the traders and travelers and in the 18th century a country hunter's post were built. The bridge tariff was levied on people, livestock and merchandise. In the 18th century, the bridge toll in Gisikon was the fourth most important toll collector after Reiden , Emmenbrücke and the Untertor in Lucerne. The last customs house, today's Gasthof Tell, dates from 1848.

In the Sonderbund War , one of the decisive fighting took place near Gisikon. After the battle near Gisikon on November 23, 1847, the canton of Lucerne surrendered on the following day as the second canton of the Sonderbund . The federal commander in this battle was the Tägerwilener brigade commander Johann Konrad Egloff , who in 1848 became a member of the government council of the canton of Thurgau.

Because of war damage from 1847 at the old river crossing, the canton built a new bridge around 1854. In 1934 a new bridge over the Reuss was built near Gisikon, which was replaced in 1974 by a wider bridge with a railway underpass because of the connection to the motorway.

schools

In 2005, a new school building was built in Gisikon in just seven weeks. The integrative school including the basic level for around 100 students from the communities of Gisikon and Honau is now being held there. From the 7th grade onwards, school attendance takes place in the neighboring community of Root . Since 2010, the community of Gisikon has been offering day-to-day structures that complement school and families. These day structures are offered from Monday to Friday and during eight weeks of vacation. The “lighthouse” premises are located in the parish hall right next to the schoolhouse. The gym classes at the Gisikon school take place in the adjacent Mühlehof center.
