The Rooterberg is a mountain range in the Swiss canton of Lucerne , to a lesser extent also in the cantons of Schwyz and Zug , which extends in two parallel ridges in the Variscan south-west-north-east direction from Lucerne in the south-west to Rotkreuz in the east-north and Lake Zug in the north-east extends. It separates Lake Lucerne in the south from the Reuss valley in the north-west. Its highest point is 839.9  m above sea level. M. some 400 meters above Lake Lucerne, approximately 425 meters above Lake Zug.

topography

The Rooterberg in the middle distance, seen from Emmenbrücke.

The Rooterberg in the narrower sense extends about seven kilometers as a uniform ridge from the Götzetal west of Udligenswils to the northeast to just before the A 4 . Its ridge line in turn divides into two ridge-like, parallel ridges only 300 meters apart, the north-west of which has the highest elevations. Elevations on the main ridge are (from northeast to southwest) Michelschrüz (795 m), Ochsewald (831 m), Fusterli (836 m), the culmination point Chare (839.6 m) and Haseberg (796 m). To the southwest, beyond the Götzetal, this ridge line continues in the Dotteberg (749 m) and, beyond a somewhat less significant cut near Adligenswil , in the Hombrig (684 m), until the ridge 5.5 kilometers southwest of the Götzetal in populated, higher Lucerne districts located in the area gradually expire (Dreilinden 553 m, Bramberg 511 m).

To the northeast, the ridge line continues vaguely beyond the motorway in Chilchberg (531 m) and the peninsula at Buonas Castle (up to 463 m).

The second main ridge, with a maximum of 651 meters, with the Meggerwald, runs parallel to the south-east for around 2 kilometers and is, especially in the northeast, much less pronounced as a ridge. It continues northeast of the motorway in Chiemen (601 m), which also ends in a peninsula on Lake Zug (summits at 542 and 510 m).

The actual main ridge drops off relatively steeply to the northwest to the valley of the Ron with the Rotsee , a side valley of the Reuss valley. Another parallel ridge runs between Ron and Reuss in Hundsrügge , which, however, remains significantly lower at a maximum of 508 meters, is made up of much younger rocks and is more of an internal elevation of the Reuss valley.

places

The largest settlement on the Rooterberg is Adligenswil , next to Udligenswil and Meierskappel , which are located on the southern slope of the main ridge. To the north are Ebikon , Dierikon , Root , Gisikon and Rotkreuz in the Rontal valley . Politically, the main part belongs to the canton of Lucerne , the extreme north to the canton of Zug and the north-east to the canton of Schwyz .

geology

The Rooterberg is part of the molasse ridges stretching from Lake Thun to Lake Constance, which orogenetically unfolded north of the Alps in the Tertiary, beginning around 23 million years BP . During the Ice Ages, the area was completely glacial, in parts such as the Götzetal also fluvial (Quaternary). A quarry mines Rooter slab sandstone, which is of local importance.

use

While the ridges are largely forested, grazing is otherwise predominant. A few roads cross the main ridge of the Rooterberg, in addition to the access roads to Adligenswil, the road through the Götzetal and the small pass road at Michelschrüz, where the Michaelskreuz chapel is also located.

Cultural monuments

On the Rooterberg there are some cultural assets of national importance , including the Götzental castle in Dierikon, the Otto Pfeifer house in Udligenswil, the Hinterspichten farm in Meierskappel, the Pius Church in Meggen and Meggenhorn Castle.
