Ebikon ( Swiss German : Äbike ) is a municipality in the Lucerne-Land constituency in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland .

geography

Ebikon is located in the Rontal and is a suburb of the city of Lucerne . In addition to the upper Rontal, the municipal area also includes most of the Rotsee and the Rathausen district , which lies on the Reuss .

In the west lies the Hundsücken with the Sedel forest. The Reuss flows north of it and forms the northern boundary of the municipality. The outflow of the Rotsee is called Ron and gives the valley its name. The Ron always flows in a northeasterly direction along the entire village, parallel to the Reuss, which flows further north.

South of Ebikon rise the Hombrig ( 684  m above sea level ), Ebrüti ( 552  m above sea level ), Ob. Ebrüti ( 694  m above sea level ) and the Dottenberg ( 750  m above sea level ). The highest point in the municipality is a little above the Ob. Ebrüti at 694  m above sea level M. , the deepest at the Rotsee at 419  m above sea level. M. 38.4% of the community area is used for agriculture, another 23.9% is forested. The remaining 30.3% is settlement area.

population

The population grew continuously until 1860 (1798–1860: +75.2%). After a decline in 1870, the population continued to grow until today. Until 1910 this was rather mediocre (1880–1910: +57.8%), then up to 1950 it was medium (1910–1950: +110.3%). The farming village between Lucerne and Zug on the Lucerne-Zurich railway line changed dramatically with the settlement of companies. After the Second World War, extreme growth followed until 1990 and the community became urbanized (1950–1990: + 8,061 people or + 268.1%). After a decade of weak growth in the 1990s, the population has increased again since the turn of the millennium (2000–2016: +17.6%).

history

853 gave Louis the German the convent Fraumünster in Zurich, which his daughter Hildegard presided as abbess, extensive lands. This included the area of today's Ebikon municipality. The marcha abinchova was originally the land of the Alemannic settler Ebo and his clan. From marcha abinchova (Latin) became Ebinkofen (Höfe der Ebinger) or Ebinkon (clan of Ebo) in the local dialect .

In the 14th century Ebikon was under the rule of Habsburg Austria. The city of Lucerne expanded more and more and from 1415 it officially installed a Vogt in Ebikon . In 1417 Ebikon received the German Emperor Sigismund , an event that the Sigismund Cross still bears witness to today . Between 1472 and 1848 Ebikon was under the sovereignty of Lucerne.

The first schoolhouse was built in 1805 and the first municipal council was elected in 1819 . During the Sonderbund War , Ebikon was occupied by the military in 1847. In 1863 the new schoolhouse was built, which still houses the school services today.

A Cistercian monastery was built in the district of Rathausen in 1245 , which was closed in 1848 in the course of secularization . The building was used as a cantonal teachers' college from 1849 to 1867 . In 1883, the Rathausen educational institution was set up in the former monastery , which developed into one of the largest children's homes in Switzerland. At the end of the 1980s, home operations ceased.

In the 1950s Ebikon developed from a stately farming village to an industrial village. In 1957, Schindler built its factory for the manufacture of elevator systems in Ebikon. In 1972, Switzerland's first DIY store was opened in Ebikon.

From 1987 onwards, Ebikon was able to call itself a city when it reached the 10,000-inhabitant mark.

politics

Ebikon, as a community of the rather Christian-conservative canton Lucerne since the 18th century, is still a parent community of the CVP . In addition, Ebikon is regarded as the average political municipality in Switzerland, since the voting results since 1981 have almost always corresponded to the results at national level.

Municipal council

The Ebikon municipal council consists of five members who are elected every four years. The community president has been Daniel Gasser ( CVP ) since 2012 .

Cantonal elections

In the 2019 Cantonal Council elections for the Canton of Lucerne, the share of the vote in Ebikon was: CVP 23.0%, SVP 20.1%, SP 17.2%, FDP 16.3%, GPS 11.0%, glp 8.7%.

National Council elections

In the Swiss parliamentary elections 2019, the share of the vote in Ebikon was: SVP 26.2%, CVP 21.4%, SP 17.5%, FDP 13.7%, Greens 12.1%, glp 7.8%.

Transport & Development

Ebikon has a train stop on the Zug – Lucerne railway line , which opens up part of the town for public transport. However, the four bus routes are more important, especially for commuter traffic. Mainly lines 22 (Luzern Bahnhof – Ebikon – Buchrain – Perlen / Inwil) and 23 (Luzern Bahnhof – Ebikon – Dierikon – Root) of the Lucerne transport company, as well as the Nachtstern line N3 (Luzern Bahnhof – Ebikon – Perlen – Inwil – Gisikon –Root). Line 26 (Brüelstrasse – Adligenswil Dorf – Unterlöchli – Ebikon – Ottigenbühl) opens up the remaining quarters.

Ebikon is on the main road Lucerne-Zug. This is completely overloaded, especially during peak traffic periods. In order to relieve the main road, the people of Lucerne voted on September 25, 2005 to build a Rontal motorway connection on the A14 for 100 million francs . The connection and the feeder line with the 891 m long tunnel went into operation on June 22, 2011.

The Ebikon voters voted in February 2005 for the rezoning of an industrial area on the border to Dierikon and thus approved the construction of a supraregional leisure and shopping complex Ebisquare . After the main French investor withdrew in 2009, Halter AG took over the rights to implement the project in 2011. The project then underwent some adjustments and was renamed Mall of Switzerland . The groundbreaking for the shopping center, which is to contain over 150 shops, restaurants and bars, as well as 12 cinema halls and a wellness, fitness and spa area, was on June 11, 2014. The opening is planned for September 28, 2017, Migros is to act as the anchor tenant , which is to run a sports shop and fitness center in addition to the supermarket. In order to develop the Mall of Switzerland, the extension of trolleybus line 1 to the shopping center is planned for 2022 .

Culture

With over 70 clubs , the community has a wide range of leisure opportunities. Typical for a Lucerne community are the numerous Guggenmusigen that appear on various occasions during Carnival . Ebikon has had a library since 1979 , in which over 20,000 media (as of 2017) are available.

The association Kunst.Kultur organizes chamber concerts in the Kunstkeramik Ebikon .

At the beginning of 2008, the Phönix youth center was opened.
