BW The Ebikon station is the station of the municipality Ebikon in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. It is located on the Zurich – Zug railway line and is mostly served by S-Bahn Luzern / Stadtbahn Zug trains. Despite its name, the Buchrain S-Bahn stop is also located in the Ebikon community.

history

The first railway line between Zurich and Lucerne was tackled in 1858 by the Swiss Ostwestbahn (OWB) as the second east-west mainline between Zurich and La Neuveville as a competitor to the Schweizerische Centralbahn (SCB). A right bank Rotseebahn was planned from the terminus via Ebikon in Lucerne's Rankhof district, where the station in the Fildern area, near today's Buchrain stop, was planned. However, a few months after construction began, the company had to file for bankruptcy and the plans were not carried out. In 1861 the Schweizerische Nordostbahn (NOB) took over the concession and continued the construction work, albeit with the current route. As is usual with the NOB, a subsidiary was founded for this purpose, the Zurich-Zug-Lucerne Railway . With the opening of the line on June 1, 1864, Ebikon also got its train station at its current location.

With the expansion of the Rotsee – Rotkreuz line to double lanes in 1991, the previous station building was also demolished and replaced by a new one. In the meantime, Ebikon had grown into an important agglomeration municipality with over 10,000 inhabitants.

In 2004, the station was included in the then newly created joint network of the Lucerne S-Bahn and the Zug urban railway and served by S-Bahn trains twice an hour: One train ran every hour between Lucerne and Baar, the second Ebikon with Baar. With the expansion of the Freudenberg – Cham line to double lanes, the timetable concept was changed again at the end of 2008 and the second train route was also extended to Lucerne, where both routes were then connected to the S18 to form a continuous line Sursee – Baar.

Rail passenger transport

In passenger traffic, the largest volume of traffic is accounted for by the half-hourly S1 service between Sursee and Baar . In addition, the station is served by long-distance trains in the marginal hours, and on Friday / Saturday and Saturday / Sunday nights by RegioExpress trains that are subject to a surcharge, but only in the direction of Lucerne, as the VBL night service is guaranteed on the Lucerne-Ebikon route .

In the event of interruptions in the Lucerne train station, long-distance trains from Zurich end every half hour in Ebikon, where a bus replacement to Lucerne is offered, as most recently after the train derailment in Lucerne on March 22, 2017.

Rail freight transport

Ebikon is one of the connection points of SBB Cargo; Until the end of 2016, the elevator manufacturer Schindler's plant was served with sidings until the latter moved the transports to the road. This means that the Migros Cooperative Lucerne's delivery in Dierikon still remains on the rails, with the siding starting at Ebikon station.

Bus transport

Ebikon train station is served by two bus stops: Ebikon, Bahnhof and Ebikon, Hofmatt. Line 22 connects Ebikon with the city of Lucerne or with Perlen and Inwil, line 23 with Lucerne or Dierikon and Root and line 26 functions as a local bus, but also opens up districts of the city of Lucerne and Adligenswils.

investment

Ebikon station consists of four through tracks, with track 1 on a side platform and tracks 3 and 4 on a central platform. The security system is controlled by a Domino 67 N interlocking, remote-controlled from the central station in Olten. In the past, several sidings from Ebikon connected various companies in the communities of Root, Dierikon and Ebikon, today only the Migros connection in Dierikon remains, ensured by shunting trips with an Eem 923 from SBB Cargo. The layout of the station also includes the Rotsee lane change, where the double-lane line from Rotkreuz is transformed into a single lane to Gütsch.

Station building

The station building from 1864 was built to a design by Paul Adolphe Tièche under the direction of Jakob Friedrich Wanner . It is a standard construction as it was also used in Gisikon, Rotkreuz and Cham. With its chalet style, it corresponded to the design used by the Bernese State Railways .

The building was demolished and replaced by a new building.

Accidents

On June 11, 2014, three freight wagons derailed during a shunting maneuver in Ebikon station. Nobody was injured, but there was major damage to the infrastructure, especially to the overhead contact line, where several masts overturned. The reason for this was several wheel sets soiled by warm joint sealing compound, which disrupted the track insulation, which is why a switch could be moved under the car.

future

As part of the new public transport concept of the Canton of Lucerne, the Ebikon train station is to be massively upgraded. Lines 1, 18, 22, 23, 26 and 111, which connect the station with the communities of Gisikon, Root, Dierikon, Inwil and Buchrain as well as several quarters and facilities such as the cantonal hospital, are to come together at a bus hub on Bahnhofplatz. This should relieve the Lucerne train station. The discontinued direct connections to Lucerne for the communities of Dierikon and Buchrain are to be compensated for with the possibility of changing trains to the S1 and the RegioExpress Lucerne – Zurich, which is planned at a later date. The first steps of the new concept are to be implemented when the timetable changes in December 2019.
