The transporting enterprises Luzern AG ( VBL ), formerly transport authority of the city of Lucerne and to 1942 tram Lucerne ( TrL ) are a transport company in the canton of Lucerne . In the city of Lucerne and the surrounding communities, they operate the Lucerne trolleybus, which opened in 1941, with seven lines and various bus lines. The trolleybus, in turn, gradually replaced the Lucerne tram that opened in 1899 until 1961 . Verkehrsbetriebe Luzern has been a public limited company since 2000, of which the city of Lucerne is the sole shareholder.

Disused lines and sections

  • On line 1: Until 1946 there was a tram track from the Kriens terminus to the Sonnenbergbahn valley station .
  • Tram line 2 ran between 1899 and 1927 via Bahnhofstrasse and Pfistergasse. Even after the tracks were laid in the Hirschengraben, the station - city theater section was still used for theater carriages until the 1950s .
  • On line 2: Between 1903 and 1913 the line ended at Emmenbrücke station , after which the route from Seetalplatz was relocated via Gerliswilstrasse to Centralplatz. Since December 2016, line 2 has again passed through Emmenbrücke station instead of Gerliswilstrasse.
  • The trolleybus line 5 Lucerne station - Bundesplatz - Steghof - Allmend was almost identical to today's trolleybus line 4, only the short section Breitenlachen-Allmend has not been served since 2005. For this, the timetable on line 4 has been condensed.
  • Line 13 Seetalplatz - Frohburg - Ruopigen - Littau Gasshof - Littau Bahnhof was operated by VBL until December 2008. Then the transport company lost the concession to Auto AG Rothenburg , which extended the line via Emmenbrücke Sprengi to Rothenburg Wahligen.
  • The trial operation of line 17 (Bundesplatz - Paulusplatz - Steinhof - Eichhof) was discontinued in 2005, and the Steinhof district was opened up with the changed route of line 11.
  • The section from Horw to Hergiswil was discontinued on line 20 in 1964.
  • The Buchrain, Reussbrücke - Inwil branch on line 22 was discontinued in December 2017, and the corresponding route is now connected to line 111 via Ebikon. At the same time, the rhythm was condensed to pearls.
  • Gütschbus : Pilatusplatz - Kasernenplatz - Château Gütsch: Operations were stopped at the beginning of January 2009 after only seven months.

Renamed lines

  • Line 18 Luzern - Friedental station was line 8 until 1981. The numbering was changed after the Lucerne station - Hirtenhof line was opened.
  • The bus line from Luzern station to Lido, opened in 1929, was originally called line 15, then line 6. After 1959, this line ended in Würzenbach (today's Brüelstrasse station) and was merged with line 2, which had been converted to trolleybus. The vacated line number 6 was transferred to the new connection between Lucerne station and Matthof in 1960.
  • The second bus route 15 ran from Kriens via Feldmühle to Obernau until 1991. Then the trolleybus line 1 was extended from Kriens to Obernau and the bus service was canceled. A few years later, route number 15 went to the Kriens district bus, which had previously been designated with the letter Q.
  • In 1998 lines 2 Emmenbrücke - Bahnhof - Würzenbach and 4/5 Hubelmatt / Allmend - Bahnhof - Wesemlin were shortened to Lucerne station; instead, lines 6/8, which had previously ended at the station, ran to Würzenbach and line 7 to Wesemlin.
  • At the 2014 timetable change, lines 26 and 27 were merged to form the new line 26, and lines 14 and 31 to form the new line 14, with the Kasernenplatz - Pilatusplatz section of line 31 introduced in 2006 being omitted

Thepra AG

On July 4, 2016, the vbl took over Thepra AG from Stans , which at that time operated a total of seven post bus lines with 20 buses in the canton of Nidwalden . The company, founded in 1975, continues to operate as an independent PostBus company. By taking over the company, vbl was able to expand its market area south of Lucerne, and synergies could also be used.

In May 2020, PostBus announced that it wanted to operate the Nidwalden lines on its own in the future and that the contract with Thepra would expire in December 2020. PostBus intends to continue to use the depot in Stans as the starting point for the lines in Nidwalden. Therefore the hall is to be rented from Thepra.

vbl-historic

For a long time, the historic vehicles of the vbl were parked in the Weinbergli depot, where the regular line vehicles are also serviced and parked. Since this was not entirely unproblematic for ongoing operations, the vehicles were relocated to an external location in 2007. Just in time for the 111th anniversary of the vbl in 2010, the two vintage car buses from the historical inventory were made ready to drive again and used for journeys.

In the meantime, the interest of classic car lovers had been aroused, who wanted to continue making the historic vehicles accessible to the public. This led to discussions between employees of the vbl and the Verkehrshaus , as a result of which vbl-historic was founded as an association on October 19, 2012. The aim of this association is not only to preserve and care for the historical vehicles, but also to operate these vehicles as historical witnesses at events.

The following vehicles are currently in the inventory of vbl-historic:

In addition, the car body of tram railcar No. 13 from 1899 is owned by the association. After ceasing operations in 1961, this car served as a private garden shed. He later went to a children's playground before returning to Lucerne in 1999.
