The Allmend Stadium , also known colloquially as Allmend , was the city's own stadium for the FC Luzern football club . The stadium was on the outskirts of Lucerne in central Switzerland . The sports facility was opened in 1934 with a wooden grandstand and several football fields all around. Over the years there has been some renovation work; so in 1957 the grandstand was expanded to 2,500 seats. Between 1981 and 1983 the main and covered standing stands for FCL fans were renewed. In 1995, the covered north tier named LUMAG grandstand was added.
Most recently the venue had four grandstands; with three covered and one back gate uncovered. There was an athletics facility right next to the Allmend stadium . It offered a theoretical capacity of 25,000 spectators. For safety reasons, the Swiss Football Association (SFV) only allowed 13,000 spectators (4,500 covered seats; 1,400 uncovered seats and 7,100 standing places) into the stadium. The attendance record with 26,000 spectators dates from 1993 and was set up in a promotion / relegation round match against FC Basel (4: 1; victory for Lucerne).
Because the stadium was no longer suitable for the league since 2007, a new building was planned at the same location. The last game in the old stadium took place on June 13, 2009 between FC Luzern and FC Lugano (5-0). After the encounter, many fans took a souvenir , such as a piece of lawn or seats, from the stadium. In summer 2009 it was decided to demolish the old venue and construction work began in August. The new stadium was named Swissporarena and has around 17,000 seats. During the new building, which was completed in summer 2011, FC Luzern played in Emmenbrücke in the Gersag stadium .
