Hybrid engine consisting of a 4-cylinder diesel engine and a powerful electric motor

On the basis of the Volvo 7900 Hybrid, an extension is offered, which u. a. Includes a roof-mounted device for occasional stop charging. As soon as a bus reaches a stop with a charging station (manufacturer ABB ), a charging unit attached to a pillar on the roadside lowers onto the coupling point mounted on the roof of the bus. A charging process takes three to six minutes.

The buses can travel up to seven kilometers quietly and emission-free between two charging processes. According to the manufacturer, this corresponds to about 70 percent of the route of an average bus route in Europe.

In addition to braking energy recovery , the hybrid buses have a diesel engine with 5.1 instead of 9 liters displacement for a longer range, which drives the wheels in parallel with the electric motor if the battery is insufficiently charged. The vehicle and the charging system were first presented to the public in September 2014 at the International Motor Show. The transport company Hamburger Hochbahn put the first bus of this type into operation on innovation line 109 in mid-December 2014 .
