The Volvo Olympian was a rear - engined double-decker bus produced by Volvo Bus in Irvine, North Ayrshire , Scotland , as the successor to the Leyland Olympian from 1992 to 2000. The model series was replaced by the two-axle Volvo B7TL and three-axle Volvo Super Olympian .

Model history

The Olympian had a modified chassis from its predecessor, Leyland Olympian; the body remained the same. It received the steering from Volvo as well as the Volvo Z-Cam braking system. The first models had either the Cummins Engine L10 with 185 kW or the Volvo TD102KF diesel engine with 180 kW, coupled with a Voith DIWA or ZF Ecomat transmission. From the end of 1996, only the Volvo D10A with 180 kW Euro II engine with electronic injection was available. The chassis was also available with bodies from body builders Walter Alexander Coachbuilders , Northern Counties and East Lancs (Pyoneer).

The Volvo Olympian remained as popular in the UK as its predecessor. Much of the production was exported to Hong Kong and Singapore . By the end of production in 2000, over 10,000 Leyland / Volvo Olympian chassis had been built. The last bus in the range was built for Yorkshire Coastliner and had an Alexander Royal body.
