The Volvo LV4 was the first truck model from the Swedish manufacturer Volvo . It was produced from 1928 to 1932. The abbreviation LV4 stands for LastVagn (“truck”), 4 cylinders.

history

In 1927, Volvo began building series automobiles; the first passenger car was the Volvo ÖV4 . A year later, in February 1928, the first truck rolled off the production line at the factory in Gothenburg, the LV4 (also called Series 1 ) . Unlike the early Volvo cars, the first truck quickly became an unexpected sales success: Although initially only 500 vehicles were planned to be produced before the model changeover, it was sold out in a short time. Therefore, around another 500 vehicles were produced in the same year. In the second series, the track was widened from 1300 mm (as in the case of passenger cars) to 1460 mm, which better suited the paths traveled by wagons. A total of around 2250 LV4 were produced. In 1934 the more powerful LV60 replaced the model.

Engines

The LV4 was with the same four-cylinder series - gasoline engine equipped as the passenger cars ÖV4 . It made 28  bhp (21  kW ). The engine allowed a top speed of 50  km / h . The other drivetrain was also taken over from the automobile industry. The engine and three-speed gearbox were own designs.

In the 1920s, trucks were still frequently equipped with chain drives , solid rubber tires and a tarpaulin roof, which left the driver largely unprotected from outside temperatures. The LV4, on the other hand, had a drive shaft (instead of a chain), pneumatic tires and a closed cab . The ladder frame was reinforced and there were two wheelbases : 3.2 and 3.7  m . The payload was limited to 1500  kg , which was half of the total weight .

Like most vehicles of the era, the LV4 had many wooden components, such as the spokes of the artillery wheels and the steering wheel, which in the second series was made of plastic ( Bakelite ). Volvo supplied either a “rolling chassis” (chassis with chassis and drive train), or optionally the chassis with a wooden driver's cab from the manufacturer Åtvidaberg, which also supplied the car bodies.

The second series of the LV4 also served as the basis of a minibus . The body was designed in a composite construction, that is, it consisted of a wooden frame structure, which was covered with nailed sheet metal.
