The Volvo FL 6 is a distribution truck for local and regional distribution that Volvo Trucks has been producing since 1985. It was introduced as a supplement to the medium-duty truck for national transport Volvo FL 7, 10, 12 , which was replaced by the Volvo FM in 1998 . Since the introduction of the 2nd generation in 2006, there has been a variant based on the FL with higher payloads , the Volvo FE . In May 2013, a new FL generation was presented, which will go on sale from autumn.

First generation (1985-2006)

In 1985 the Volvo FL 6 appeared as a complement to the Volvo FL 7, 10, 12 and was voted Truck of the Year in the same year . The Volvo D6A turbodiesel with 132 kW 180 PS, 162 kW 220 PS and 184 kW 250 PS was used as the drive . The power was transmitted using a ZF Friedrichshafen 9-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed automatic transmission from Allison . In 1997 versions of the FLC with a total weight of up to 7.5 tons were introduced below the total weight of 10 tons. This had a Volvo D4A 3989 cm³ turbodiesel with 135 hp, synchronized 5-speed manual transmission, disc brakes all around and air suspension on the rear axle. This engine complied with the then strictest emissions regulations in Sweden and other countries in Western Europe as well as in the United States. In 2000 the series was revised with a more modern dashboard, new front design and all engines now met the Euro 3 emissions standard .

Second generation since 2006

The second generation FL, introduced in 2006, shares the cab with the Renault Midlum and the DAF LF . The variety of variants has now been significantly increased, in addition to the standard truck for freight transport and a tractor unit , Volvo now also offers variants such as fire trucks, tow trucks and others directly ex works. A special tipper vehicle for construction site traffic is now also delivered directly from the factory. In addition to various other special vehicles, in addition to the standard driver's cab, the FL can also be ordered with a long cabin with sleeping facilities and a crew cab with 7 seats. Volvo no longer offers a 7.5-ton version.

The new generation was initially powered by the 6-cylinder 7.2 liter Deutz D7E turbodiesel with 240 or 280 hp, which met the Euro 4 emissions standard. Since 2008 the D7E turbodiesel has been installed with 240 PS, 265 PS, 280 PS and 295 PS, all of which meet the Euro 5 emissions standard. The power is transmitted with a 6- or 9-speed manual transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen or a 6-speed automatic transmission from Allison Transmission .

Third generation since 2013

The latest version of the Volvo FL was first introduced in May 2013. It is available with either a 4-cylinder 5.1 liter Volvo D5K or a 7.7 liter 6-cylinder Volvo D8K, both of which meet the new Euro 6 emissions standard. There is also a new 12-tonne payload version with the four-cylinder D5 with 240 hp, which makes this version lighter than the 2006 version.

The fully electric version of the Volvo FL was presented for the first time on April 12, 2018 in a version with 16 t GVW .

It is used for inner-city delivery traffic, waste management and other urban tasks. Thanks to the quiet drive, night deliveries in particular are also possible in noise-sensitive areas.

The electric motor goes to the rear axle via a two-speed gearbox and cardan shafts. The maximum torque of the electric motor is 425 Nm. The maximum torque on the rear axle is 16 kNm.

2–6 lithium-ion batteries with a total of 100–300 kWh are available for energy storage. The range is Volvo with up to 300 km.

There are 2 charging methods available: DC fast charging via the Combined Charging System / Combo2 for up to 150 kW, charging time 1–2 hours. Alternatively, AC charging on the power grid (22 kW) via a Type 2 plug. Volvo mentions up to 10 hours (e.g. as night charging) with the maximum battery capacity of 300 kWh.

Series production began in 2019, and the waste disposal and recycling company Renova and the forwarding agency TGM in Gothenburg put the first vehicles into operation in 2018.
