The Volvo F 88 / F 89 was a series of heavy front steering wheel - trucks that from 1965 to 1977 by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Trucks has been established.

F88

Volvo embarked on a major overhaul of its truck range in the 1960s with the export-oriented System 8 program. Eight component groups were specifically targeted. For the drive train, this meant new diesel engines , transmissions and rear axles. For the chassis , Volvo renovated the frame, brakes, steering and suspension. The tilting cabs were only slightly revised. The F 88 replaced the two-axle (4 × 2) L4951 in 1965 , the FB 88 the three-axle (6 × 2) L4956 .

Initially, the windshield wipers were attached to the top of the windshield , there was a horizontal handle in body color under the left side of the windshield, the radiator grille was chrome-plated and the front indicators were arranged horizontally. The interior was designed in gray and red. Since 1966 the indicators have been placed a little lower.

From 1969 the windshield wipers were hinged at the bottom and the indicators were arranged vertically.

In 1970, the F 88 received vertical, black handles behind the doors, improved mirrors and position lights on the roof and the handle under the windshield moved from the right to the left.

From September 1971, the F 88 was fitted with an air intake pipe behind the cab. The cabin was equipped with a sunroof and got blue upholstery on the inside.

In 1973 the F 88 was revised for the last time. Now there were black, horizontal handles on the left and right under the windshield, the radiator grille was now made of black plastic and below was a Volvo lettering in silver capital letters, as it had been on the F 89 since 1970. The interior got brown upholstery.

The F 88 was powered by a newly developed TD100 turbodiesel engine with 260 hp and a displacement of 9.6 liters . Until 1970, Volvo also offered the F 88 with D100 diesel engines without turbo with 166 and 200 hp.

By 1977 Volvo produced 40,215 chassis.

G 88

In 1970, a variant of the Volvo G 88 came into the range in which the front axle was arranged further forward. Due to the greater distance between the front and rear axles, the payload could be increased, but this was only permitted in some countries such as Sweden , Australia and Brazil .

The G 88 was produced a year longer than the F 88 until 1978 and was available with the 200 hp diesel engine and the 260 hp turbo diesel engine of the F 88.

F 88 290

Since the stronger F 89 could only be built as a left-hand drive, an F 88 with a 290 hp TD100B turbo diesel engine was offered for right-hand drive markets from 1975 onwards. This was visually recognizable by a wider radiator grille and a larger air intake pipe.

F 89

In West Germany, from January 1, 1972, articulated and truck trailers with a gross vehicle weight of more than 28.5 t were required to have 8 HP / t. A truck with a gross vehicle weight of 38 t required at least 304 hp. In order to continue to be represented in this weight class, Volvo developed the TD120A, a more powerful turbo diesel engine with a displacement of 12 liters and 330 hp. For this larger engine, some changes compared to the F 88 were necessary, so that the F 89 was created. Because of the enlarged engine tunnel on the left, the F 89 could only be offered as a left-hand drive. The F 89 was visually recognizable by the wide radiator grille made of black plastic.

The first vehicles were delivered with a gray / red interior and without a sunroof. In 1971, like the F 88, there were blue upholstery and sunroof, 1973 brown upholstery and handles below the windshield.

For some markets, the F 89 was also offered with an 8 × 4 chassis. There were also fire trucks with 6 × 6 chassis and modified engines.

Volvo produced 21,005 chassis by 1977.

G 89

In some countries there was a variant of the G 89 with a front axle in front.

F 89 CH 230

From 1977 to 1979, an F 89 CH 230 just 2.3 meters wide was offered specifically for the Swiss market .
