Second generation 2001-2013

The 2nd generation was introduced in 2001 parallel to the revised Volvo FH series. In addition to the new design, the new 9-liter D9A engine replaced the 7- and 10-liter diesel engines. The Volvo I-Shift automatic transmission was also new. The Volvo safety system FUPS (Front Underrun Protection System) increased passive safety . This also reduced the risk that smaller vehicles could dip under the truck in a frontal crash.

Facelift 2005

In 2005 the FM was revised parallel to the FH. Outwardly only slightly changed, the new 13-liter diesel engine D13A and the revised 9-liter D9B replaced the previous engines in combination with a revised version of the I-shift transmission. The engines now fulfilled the Euro 4 emission class. The D13A was also supplied with SCR exhaust technology. The Volvo VEB + engine brake was also improved and was now also linked to the cruise control function.

Facelift 2007

In 2007, Volvo introduced the D13B diesel engine with VGT turbocharger at FM . Unlike the competition, a diesel particulate filter is only offered as an option. Unlike the FH, the 500 hp version of this engine is not available for the FM and 440 hp is now the largest power variant. The D11B engine replaced the most powerful variant of the D9B and was also introduced as a 430 hp variant. In addition to other minor changes, the safety systems ESP , lane departure warning and distance warning systems were introduced.
