On September 14, 1915, James A. Allison founded the Indianapolis Speedway Team Corporation . The result was the Allison Engine Company , which was bought by General Motors in 1929 . General Motors founded Allison Transmission in 1946 . Milestones up to 1970 were the first powershift transmission for the navy, powershift transmissions for road vehicles, the angular drive for tracked vehicles , integrated hydraulic retarders , fully automatic transmissions for trucks and transmissions equipped with twin turbines for transport vehicles.

In the 1970s, Allison Transmission also manufactured components for the electrical drive part of EMD locomotives . In the meantime until 1987 the company was called "Detroit Diesel Allison". Between 1980 and 1987 Allison supplied 5000 X1100 transmissions for the M1 and M1 Abrams tanks . It enables the acceleration from 65 tonnes of vehicle mass to 32 km / h in seven seconds and deceleration from 64 km / h to 0 km / h in four seconds using the integrated braking system. In February 2003, Allison Transmission merged with GM Powertrain . In June 2007, General Motors sold the company to financial investors Carlyle Group and Onex Corporation .

In 2012, the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange . Two years later, in September 2014, both Carlyle and Onyx sold their holdings in Allison Transmissions.

Products

In addition to automatic transmissions with integrated braking systems, Allision Transmission also manufactures hybrid drive systems. This system is installed, for example, in the buses of the Polish company Solaris Bus & Coach, known as Urbino 18 Hybrid . The transmission, presented in 2003, enables buses to be driven purely electrically as well as with a combustion engine . In 2016, the hybrid drive system was already used in more than 7,800 buses and deployed in over 230 cities worldwide.
