The Volvo ÖV 4 is the first series production car from Volvo .

description

The first ÖV4 rolled off the assembly line on April 14, 1927. The abbreviation ÖV stands for "öppen vagn" (open car) and 4 for the number of cylinders . From a technical point of view, this automobile was nothing special as it was based almost entirely on almost outdated technology.

The Phaeton body (four-door with fabric hood) consists of a wooden frame (in composite construction) covered with sheet metal. It sits on a separate steel chassis . The chassis has rigid axles on long leaf springs at the front and rear. There is space for five people in the interior. The brakes are operated mechanically and only act on the rear wheels. Mechanical all-wheel brakes were only offered on request towards the end of production.

The purchase price at that time was 4800 Swedish kronor , which was relatively expensive and led to rather weak buying enthusiasm. In the first year only 297 vehicles were sold. Another reason for this was that the vehicle, even with the side windows that could be inserted by hand and the fabric roof, was not waterproof and so it was only suitable to a limited extent for year-round operation in Sweden.

Because the then mostly poor working class in Sweden could not yet afford cars, Volvo decided to build even more expensive cars for the upper class in the future. This is how the Volvo PV4 was born .

The Volvo ÖV4 is also known under the nickname "Jacob" because one of the 10 prototypes was completed on Jacob's name day.
