The S 431 DT is a Setra double-decker touring coach that has been manufactured by Evobus since 2002 . It is the only double-decker model in the TopClass 400 series . In 2013 there was a facelift, in which the vehicle was mainly technically revised and a Euro VI engine was introduced. A new cockpit was also introduced. Up to August 2014 the S 431 DT had been sold around 1,400 times, Daimler reports a total of 2,500 vehicles delivered by June 2015. The vehicle was built in the Setra plant in Neu-Ulm. In July 2017 the successor model S 531 DT was presented.

The S 431 DT gained importance in particular due to the rapidly growing long-distance bus business. Originally it was equipped with a V8 diesel engine of the type OM 502, which has an output of 370 kW and meets the Euro V emissions standard. The engine is linked to an automated ZF twelve-speed transmission. In 2013 the bus was comprehensively modernized technically.

Technical description (from 2013)

body

The S 431 DT is a three-axle double-decker with a self-supporting body in a skeleton frame construction . Welded square tubes with circumferential ring frames form the basic structure. The individual body modules are made of sheet steel and glass fiber reinforced plastic. The lower deck is low-floor and divided, in the front there are places for passengers, in the stern the engine is installed, between the engine and the passenger compartment there is a luggage compartment. This has a volume of 8.3 m 3 and is accessible from the sides through several doors. Two pneumatic single-leaf swing doors with a width of 900 mm each are installed in the passenger compartment; the driver has a separate mechanically opened door in his place. To the left of the rear door and directly behind the driver there is a staircase to the upper deck, which is developed as a passenger compartment from the rear of the vehicle to the front. It has its own windshield with wipers.

landing gear

The front wheels are steered and individually suspended on double wishbones; they are cushioned by two air bags with two shock absorbers. The middle axle, which is a rigid axle of the type MB RO 440, is driven. It has four air bellows and four shock absorbers. As with the front axle, the wheels on the trailing axle are individually suspended and steered; the trailing axle is manufactured by ZF. It is also sprung with two air bellows, two shock absorbers are also installed. The front and drive axles have a torsion bar spring stabilizer . The height of the S 431 DT can be adjusted with an electronically controlled level control. It is a ball screw - steering installed (ZF Servocom). All around the vehicle has steel wheels measuring 9 × 22.5 with a rim diameter of 572 mm (22.5 inches), on which tires of size 315/80 R 22.5 are mounted.

Braking system

All wheels have disc brakes, the braking system works with compressed air and is electronically controlled. Upstream of the brake system is a secondary water retarder from Voith : Instead of oil, the engine's cooling water is used as a retarder fluid, which means that the retarder can be smaller and lighter than a conventional retarder. If the driver presses the brake pedal only lightly, the retarder is first used to brake, and the disc brakes are only activated when the brake pedal is stepped harder. The retarder can also be operated manually with the right pitman arm in the cab. The S 431 DT also has an engine brake; the handbrake is a spring-loaded brake . An anti-lock braking system, an electronic stability program, traction control and a downhill braking aid are standard.

engine and gears

The vehicle is driven by a supercharged six-cylinder diesel engine of the type OM 471 to 12,809 cm 3 capacity and a power of 375 kW at 1800 min -1 . The maximum torque of 2.5 kN · m is available at 1100 min −1 . The engine has common rail injection and an exhaust aftertreatment system with an SCR catalytic converter , so that it complies with the Euro 6 emissions standard. The torque is transmitted to an automated gearbox of the type GO 250-8 Powershift , which is designed for a maximum input torque of 2.5 kN · m. It has eight gears and, unlike a converter transmission, no hydrodynamic torque converter . Like the retarder, it is operated with the right pitman arm.

Furnishing

The interior of the S 431 DT has a modular structure. It can be supplied as a 3 or 4 star variant as standard, which differ in particular in the seating. The 4-star variant is equipped with 78 seats, the 3-star variant has between 83 and 87 seats, if the front staircase is converted, even 93 seats. The rear door can optionally be widened by 250 mm so that barrier-free entry is possible. The toilet is built into the lower deck and instead of seats, a bistro with kitchen can also be supplied. The fuel tank is installed at the front left behind the front axle and has a capacity of 510 l. On request, an additional fuel tank with a capacity of 220 l can be installed above the right rear wheel, which then occupies part of the luggage compartment. A urea solution is required for exhaust gas aftertreatment , which is carried in a 40 l container; Setra specifies the volume as 50 l.

criticism

Jürgen Görgler describes the Setra S 431 DT as a “comparatively inexpensive alternative” when the high purchase price of € 470,000 is compared with the capacity provided the vehicle is used to full capacity. He describes the driver's position as comfortable and functional, and the engine runs remarkably smoothly.
