Kastanienbaum (in Lucerne dialect : Chéschtenebaum ), from Middle High German chestene (e) ( sweet chestnut ), is a village in the municipality of Horw in the canton of Lucerne , Switzerland . It is located on a peninsula directly on Lake Lucerne . There are upscale villa settlements in Kastanienbaum.

International recognition has chestnut tree by the Research Center for Limnology of Eawag obtained (Swiss Federal Institute for Water Resources, Environmental Science and Technology). This multidisciplinary external operation of the ETH- Annex Institute Eawag deals with the ecology of surface waters . The location directly on the lake results in an open-air laboratory that is explored and sampled with its own fleet of research boats.

In Switzerland, Kastanienbaum is also known as the former location of the Swiss journalism school MAZ . The International Hotel Management Institute Switzerland is also based there.

Kastanienbaum is a station of the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company on the Lucerne - Alpnachstad line, which is used from spring to autumn .
