The Eemian 923 of SBB Cargo is an electro-diesel locomotive for easy delivery and shunting. The locomotive is called the "Butler" by the manufacturing company Stadler Rail .
history
At SBB Cargo, different types of locomotive are in operation for the intended service, but they no longer meet the requirements of the 2010s in terms of age, performance and ecological balance. In the case of a delivery where the last section of the route is not electrified, either a locomotive change must be made or the entire route is driven by a diesel locomotive, even if a large part of the route is electrified. Six manufacturers had submitted bids for the new locomotive, with Stadler Rail winning the tender in particular because of its good ecological balance and low operating costs. SBB Cargo placed an order with Stadler Winterthur for almost CHF 88 million for 30 hybrid locomotives. The aim of SBB was to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 15,000 tons by 2015 . With annual savings of 9,000 tons, the procurement of the Eem 923 is the most important individual measure.
technology
The Eem 923 is largely based on the Ee 922 that is already in operation at SBB in passenger transport . It is driven by two three-phase asynchronous motors with IGBT- based converters . A diesel-electric drive with a 336 kW diesel engine is available for energy generation independent of the contact wire .
commitment
The shunting locomotives are primarily used in light delivery and shunting services; Thanks to the top speed of 120 km / h, the shunting locomotives can also be used on light routes. The 30 pieces were delivered in 2012/13. In addition, SBB Cargo secured an option for additional vehicles, which will be redeemed in the following years if necessary. The first locomotive was put into service on March 8, 2012.
Awards
The rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler was honored with the innovation prize of the Privatbahn Magazin for the development of the innovative twin-power locomotive SBB Eem 923 in 2012/2013 .
Baptismal name
The locomotive 923 001 stationed in Zofingen was named after the local mountain "Heitern", and the other locomotives are also to be named after local mountains. The local SBB Cargo production team selects the name to be christened.
