population

The population increased significantly from 1798 to 1837 (1798–1837: + 44.9%). It then fell slightly over the next 23 years (1837–1860: −6.4%) before a second growth phase set in (1860–1880: + 21.8%). Then there was an up and down in the population. Only between 1970 and 2013 did a long-term growth surge follow. The reason for this was the settlement pressure in the nearby municipalities of the canton of Zug - and therefore the sharp rise in housing rents - and the increasing number of commuting employees with increasing mobility (car). The growth has currently stopped and the population has stagnated since 2013.

history

A Franconian Meier from Cham is said to have given the order to build a chapel in the 7th century. Hence the name "Meierskappel". The subordination of a chapel to the monastery Regula and Felix in Zurich in the year 858 is certain. Meierskappel fell to the Bishop of Constance in 1244, to the Canons' Monastery of Zurich in 1271 and to the House of Habsburg in 1306 . The city of Lucerne finally acquired the town in 1406. Battles took place in Meierskappel: in 1798 when the French marched into Switzerland and in 1847 during the Sonderbund War .

In recent years, Meierskappel has developed more and more into a place of residence for employees from the neighboring communities of Risch and Küssnacht . The close connection to Risch-Rotkreuz led to a vote on an inter-cantonal merger in 2005, which, however, failed because the Risch population voted against.

schools

The primary school and kindergarten are located in the “Höfli” community center. The upper level is in Risch-Rotkreuz.

Attractions

The hilly, wooded headland of Chiemen, which protrudes into Lake Zug, and the area around the Michaelskreuz ( 795  m above sea level ) are the greatest natural beauties. Also worth seeing is the catholic village church “To our love woman”, whose tower was built in 1440. The nave was built in 1684 and extended in 1878. In 2011 the church was renovated. Further sights are the village fountain, which is dedicated to Ignaz Kronenberg, the local poet from Meierskappel, and the baroque farm ensemble in the hamlet of "Hinterspichten", which is a listed building.
