Mariano Simon Garriga

Mariano Simon Garriga (born May 31, 1886 in Port Isabel , Texas , † February 21, 1965 ) was an American clergyman and bishop of Corpus Christi .

Life

Mariano Simon Garriga received the sacrament of ordination for the Apostolic Vicariate of Brownsville on July 2, 1911 .

Pope Pius XI appointed him on June 20, 1936 Coadjutor Bishop of Corpus Christi and Titular Bishop of Syene . The episcopal ordination donated him the Archbishop of San Antonio , Arthur Jerome Drossaerts , on September 21 of the same year; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Corpus Christi, Emmanuel Boleslaus Ledvina , and the Bishop of Fargo , Aloysius Muench .

With Emmanuel Boleslaus Ledvina's resignation on March 15, 1949, Garriga succeeded him as Bishop of Corpus Christi. During his tenure, he brought the Jesuits to Corpus Christi and made them head of the boys' seminary that he founded in 1960 . He promoted church education by founding a large number of parish schools.

Garriga attended the first session of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.
