Johann Konrad Egloff

Johann Konrad Egloff (born August 31, 1808 in Tägerwilen ; † October 20, 1886 ibid) was a Thurgau government councilor, district post director in Zurich and a senior Swiss military member during the Sonderbund War .

Life

Egloff's father of the same name worked as a surgeon. Nothing is known about Egloff's schooling or training. At the age of 18, he entered the military on November 12, 1826. On the 50th anniversary of his service he received a certificate of merit as a colonel divisional officer. In 1831, at the age of 23, he married Elisabeth Vogel (1808–1877), daughter of the pastor Johannes Vogel. From this marriage came the son Johann Konrad junior. (1838-1907). As a widower he married the widow Ursula Elisabetha Scherrer geb. Lehmann, daughter of Felix Lehmann from Oerlikon .

He first worked as a commercial clerk in Winterthur , then as a farmer at Gut Okenfiner (today Haus zum Okenfiner ) in his home village. In the year of his marriage, Egloff joined the local council and became a justice of the peace at the district court of the Tägerwilen district. The other stages of his career were in 1838 cantons , 1838–47 war council and 1849 constitutional council.

1841 Egloff is named as a federal colonel . In Swiss military history, Egloff is considered to be the army commander who, through his determination and fighting strength, achieved the decisive victory in the battle of Gisikon and thus the defeat of the Lucerne for the federal staff in the Sonderbund War on November 23, 1847 : Lucerne capitulated one day later.

Since the opening of the canton school in Frauenfeld in November 1853, Egloff supported this educational institution significantly and directed the so-called cadet corps, which was made up of the student body. They practiced drills and shooting weekly in uniform. However, the teachers soon turned against Egloff's order that the students in uniform also had to greet the teachers militarily, which Egloff, in addition to his view that the cadet corps exercises were not promoted enough by the school, again very angry, whereupon he the Gave up management.

The burial took place on October 22, 1886 in his birthplace.
