Edition of the Allgemeine Schweizerische Militär-Zeitung from October 1876

The Allgemeine Schweizerische Militärzeitschrift (ASMZ) is a military specialist journal that has been published in Switzerland since 1833 .

It was successively named Helvetische Militär-Zeitschrift (1833–1846), Swiss Military Journal (1847–1854), Allgemeine Schweizerische Militär-Zeitung and Allgemeine Schweizerische Militär-Zeitung (1855–1947) and since 1948 its current name.

From 1855 onwards, the publication with the subtitle “Organ of the Swiss Army” was published in Basel and was thus comparable to the Prussian military weekly between 1824 and 1867. In the weekly newspaper, officers published larger articles on warfare and war history as well as smaller messages. From 1903, a literary sheet for a detailed review of military science publications was also published. The editorship was temporarily under the direction of Colonel Ulrich Wille , who in 1914 became general and thus commander in chief of the Swiss army . The price of the newspaper was comparatively cheap at CHF 10 per year.

Today the ASMZ is published under the title General Swiss Military Magazine and the brand ASMZ Sicherheit Schweiz by the Swiss Officers' Society in Zurich and has been its official organ since 1948. Thus the magazine only has an official character. According to its own information, it fulfills the following tasks:

  • Statements on military and defense political events and developments at home and abroad
  • Military and defense information
  • Encourage practical work with the Swiss Army
  • Information about the activities of the Swiss Officers Association

There was speculation in the media about a merger with the magazine Schweizer Soldat , whose target group are NCOs. However, the corresponding plans were denied by the Swiss Officers' Society in 2007.

According to the company, the circulation is 17,060 copies sold or 19,500 copies distributed, the reach 54,856 readers (2015).

From 1968 to 1975 Colonel i General Walter Schaufelberger , from 2008 to 2011 Colonel i General Roland Beck was editor-in-chief of the ASMZ, then Colonel i General Peter Schneider. Today is a division general a. D. Andreas Bölsterli the editor-in-chief.
