The Uri is built in 1901, the oldest active paddle steamer of Switzerland . It operates on Lake Lucerne and is operated by the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company (SGV).

history

The Uri between 1914 and 1918, loaded with riding horses

The former steamship company of the Vierwaldstättersee (DGV) ordered the salon steamship from Sulzer in Winterthur in 1899 . The building decision coincided with that for the paddle steamer Unterwalden , which was however ordered from Escher Wyss . The launch took place on January 19, 1901 and on May 8, 1901, the ship began regular service after the official takeover on May 4.

As a machine, the Uri has a sloping Sulzer two-cylinder superheated steam composite steam engine with condensation. It has an output of 650 hp .

The defective paddle wheels had to be replaced as early as the winter of 1903/04. A closed wheelhouse was built around 1920 and the masts were shortened at the same time. In 1949 there was a conversion from coal to heavy oil firing and in 1952 a major overhaul was carried out. After another major overhaul in 1959, the Uri was extensively rebuilt from 1960 to 1961 in order to enable it to be driven under the new Acheregg Bridge near Stansstad . As with the Unterwalden , an aluminum protective roof was built on the upper deck together with the new, retractable wheelhouse, a telescopic chimney and telescopic masts . After a general overhaul from 1979 to 1981, during which the Uri stayed in service in the summer months, these modifications were reversed with the general overhaul from 1991 to 1994. The Uri regained the appearance it had before 1960, with which it also lost the ability to drive under the Acheregg Bridge. At the same time, the steam boiler and the low-pressure cylinder had to be replaced.

Like the other four active Lake Lucerne steamers Unterwalden , Schiller , Gallia and City of Lucerne , the Uri is classified as a cultural asset of national importance (category A). In 1998 the Uri was named a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers .

Furnishing

The 1st class salon of the Uri was designed by Filippo Cassina from Milan in the neo-baroque style and is reminiscent of a gazebo . During the general overhaul of the Uri from 1991 to 1994, the furniture and ceiling paintings were reconstructed. The 2nd class saloon was renovated at the end of 2006. Bugzier is the primal animal .

commitment

The Uri is used for both scheduled and charter trips. As of the end of the 2010 season, she had covered 2,073,679 km. In cold winters she was occasionally used as an icebreaker , most recently in 1963. Currently she is the only steamship on Lake Lucerne that also operates in late autumn and winter until the end of December. Prominent passengers on the Uri in 1994 were the Swiss President Jean-Pascal Delamuraz , in 1995 the German President Roman Herzog together with the Swiss President Kaspar Villiger and in 1998 Hillary Clinton .

Incidents

On October 18, 1916, the Uri ran aground at the mouth of the Engelberger Aa near Buochs . The reason for this was that the lighting of the signal tower had failed. The ship was only slightly damaged and was able to return on its own the next day. On January 7, 1931, she collided with a trajectory , and both ships were able to continue. The Uri then operated for decades without a bow ornament, which had been lost during the repair. In 1959 there was a collision with the city of Lucerne at the jetty in Lucerne , the control of which had failed mechanically. On December 27, 2014, there was an electrical fire in the generator room in Kastanienbaum with a lot of smoke. The Uri was then in Hergiswil evacuated and extinguished the fire. The fire was likely caused by a defective cable. The ship was back in service at the start of the 2015 season.
