The Unterwalden is a listed paddle wheel steamer on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland . It is operated by the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company (SGV).

history

The steamship company of the Lake Lucerne at the time (DGV) ordered the salon steamship from Escher Wyss in Zurich in 1899 . The decision to build coincided with that for the paddle steamer Uri , which, however , was ordered from Sulzer . The steam engine of the Unterwald was at the 1900 Paris World's Fair presented to the public. The ship was launched on November 12, 1901, and the ship was opened to traffic on May 18, 1902.

Around 1920 the Unterwalden received a closed wheelhouse . During a major revision in 1942, the permissible load capacity was increased from originally 850 to 900 people and in 1949 there was a conversion from coal to heavy oil firing . A major renovation, which greatly changed the appearance of the Unterwalden , was carried out in 1961. As with the Uri , which was rebuilt at the same time, the aim was to enable people to drive under the new Acheregg bridge at Stansstad in order to get to the Alpnachersee . Together with the new, retractable wheelhouse, a telescopic chimney and telescopic masts, an aluminum protective roof was built on the upper deck .

In the 1960s and 1970s, the shipping company pursued the course of gradually phasing out its steamers and replacing them with motor ships. The Unterwalden was to be replaced by a motor ship in the mid-1970s; In 1976, a motor ship of the same name, today's Europa, was launched . This led to an "outcry of indignation" in the Lucerne population, to a popular movement for the preservation of steamers and to actions by the Association of Steamers Friends, which had been founded a few years earlier. The paddle steamer Unterwalden had been shut down since 1977, but the SGV decided to keep it in 1978 after representatives of the steamer friends had been elected to the board of directors after a share capital increase in 1977 . In 1982 it was decided to renovate the ship.

After a complete renovation, the Unterwalden was able to start on her second maiden voyage in 1985. The external appearance remained characterized by the renovation in 1961. A panorama restaurant was set up on the rear upper deck.

At the end of the 2000s, another general overhaul was necessary, which began in 2008 and was completed in spring 2011. At a cost of around 10 million Swiss francs , it represents the largest revision of the Unterwalden to date . The exterior of the ship has now been restored to the condition it was in before 1961, although it was still possible to drive under the Acheregg Bridge, the so-called «Alpnachfahrigkeit», which is particularly true of the construction made more difficult by the retractable chimney and wheelhouse according to the appearance of the original, non-retractable elements. A planned conversion from oil to gas combustion turned out to be impossible due to the legal situation. The two old steam boilers were replaced by a single new boiler. For the electricity demand, a diesel generator was chosen instead of the previous steam turbine generator , this was the first time on a steamship on Lake Lucerne. On May 7, 2011, the renovated Unterwalden was inaugurated with a steamboat parade.

The Unterwalden remains after the renovation of 2008/2011 the only SGV-steamer that can pass under the Achereggbrücke because the Uri their "Alpnachgängigkeit" lost again in the general revision of 1991 to 1994. The Unterwalden is now approved for 700 passengers.

Like the other four active Lake Lucerne steamers Uri , Schiller , Gallia and City of Lucerne , the Unterwalden was classified as a cultural asset of national importance (category A). It is the first steamer on Lake Lucerne, from Lucerne Canton as a whole ship under monument protection was provided (at the Schiller is the 1st class lounge under protection). Like all objects placed under monument protection, it may not be renovated, changed, removed or otherwise impaired in its effect without the approval of the Education and Culture Department.

Furnishing

Like the Uri salon, the 1st class salon in Unterwalden was designed by Filippo Cassina from Milan . It is in the style of the New Rococo and has a parquet floor with elaborate inlays and etched glass doors. Bugzier is the Swiss cross .

commitment

The Unterwalden is used for both scheduled and charter trips. As of the end of the 2009 season, she had covered 1,723,530 km. Prominent passengers on the Unterwalden in 1946 were Winston Churchill , in spring 1986 the Finnish President Mauno Koivisto together with Federal President Alphons Egli on the occasion of a state visit and in 1987 King Hussein of Jordan with his wife Nūr . In 2013, Sauli Niinistö , a Finnish President, visited the Unterwalden again , together with Federal President Ueli Maurer .

Incidents

On October 30, 1923, the Unterwalden stranded near Beckenried by an oversight of the helmsman . No people were harmed, but the necessary repair work dragged on until 1924. On February 13, 1956, near Kehrsiten , the ship drove into a wall on the embankment in thick fog and dug itself seven meters into land. Nevertheless, the damage turned out to be minor and the ship was soon back in service. On August 19, 2016, the Unterwalden collided with the Schiller . No person was harmed in this incident either. While the Schiller was able to resume duty on the course the following day after an emergency repair, somewhat more extensive repair work was required on the bow of the more heavily damaged Unterwalden , but it was also able to resume scheduled operations on Saturday, August 27, 2016.
