The Gotthard was built by SGV as a replacement for the Gotthard paddle steamer of the same name from 1898 in their own shipyard in Lucerne . In 1965 it was decided that after the completion of the Pilatus in 1966, the new Gotthard should be built on Kiel , whereby the plans should be adopted, but should be adapted to the latest technical aspects. The launch took place on August 12, 1970, the maiden voyage on September 3, 1970. What was special about the maiden voyage was that the rescue of the other paddle steamers was organized in its aftermath. In 1994 the ship was rebuilt.
The Gotthard is used both for scheduled trips in regular service but also primarily for special trips.
