The Catamaran Cirrus is a passenger - motor boat on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland . It is operated by the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company (SGV).

history

The Cirrus was built in the SGV (Shiptec Lucerne) shipyard to replace the Pilatus , which was commissioned in 1966 . After more than 40 years, another SGV ship was planned and built entirely in its own shipyard.

The five-month development phase began in 2007, followed by a two-year construction period. 49,000 hours were invested in the project with the development name MS 300 . The construction costs amounted to 6.4 million CHF. The maiden voyage took place on April 23, 2009.

The Cirrus was the first catamaran on a Swiss lake. It is used all year round on course trips and extra trips and can be rented for events.

SGV originally planned to build two catamarans. After cautious reactions from the population to the Cirrus , the SGV initially explicitly left open whether a second catamaran would actually be built. The next two SGV ships, Saphir (2012) and Diamant (2017), were not designed as catamarans.

technical description

The ship, made of aluminum, is 40 meters long and 12.5 meters wide, displaces 126.9 tons and is powered by two diesel engines with 368 kW each, with which it reaches a speed of 31 km / h (operating speed 26 km / h ). The two keels are 8.5 meters apart and load a draft of 1.39 meters. The power is transmitted to the propellers with two conventional Reintjes gears . They have to be disengaged and engaged manually. In the event of an emergency stop at full speed, the Cirrus has a stopping distance of two and a half ship lengths.

For reasons of clarity and accessibility, the ship has only one passenger deck , with an area of 359 m² for 300 passengers (banquet seating: 120). The design of the catamaran was chosen to allow the required large width. A show kitchen is located in the middle of the passenger area surrounded by panoramic windows.

There is a main control stand in the middle of the bridge and an external control stand on each side.
