The Schiller is a paddle wheel steamer with a listed Art Nouveau salon on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland . It is operated by the Lake Lucerne Shipping Company (SGV).
history
The steamship company of the Lake Lucerne at that time (DGV) ordered the saloon steamship from Sulzer in Winterthur in 1904 . It should be based on the type of the saloon steamers Uri and Unterwalden built a few years earlier , but be a little larger and more powerful. The background to the order was that the DGV's fleet was very busy, especially in midsummer, and it should be possible to conduct further courses. The launch of the Schiller took place on February 17, 1906, on May 17, the ship was given the definitive operating license by the then Swiss Post and Railway Department and on May 21, it began service.
As a machine, the Schiller has an inclined Sulzer two-cylinder superheated steam composite steam engine with condensation. It has an output of 700 hp .
Around 1920 the Schiller , which, like the other steamships of its generation, originally had an open steering position, received a wheelhouse. The first major overhaul took place in 1930. In 1946 the smoke cabin on the upper deck was given a protective roof. At the beginning of 1952 the firing of the steam boilers was switched from coal to heavy oil and in 1953 another major overhaul was carried out. Since the Schiller , unlike the Uri and Unterwalden, was not equipped with a retractable chimney and wheelhouse when the low Acheregg Bridge was built in 1961, it has not been able to navigate the Alpnachersee since then .
Compared to the other Lake Lucerne steamers from the fin de siècle period , the Schiller's external appearance has only changed slightly over time. In 1976/77 it was the first SGV steamer to be renovated with financial help from the Association of Steamers Friends. In 1998/99, the Schiller was comprehensively renovated at a cost of 6 million Swiss francs , including a new steam boiler, and in 2000 it was able to be put back into operation.
In honor of its namesake Friedrich Schiller , the Schiller has been flying a flag with the Weimar coat of arms on the bow since 1995 .
Like the other four active Lake Lucerne steamers Uri , Unterwalden , Gallia and City of Lucerne , the Schiller was classified as a cultural asset of national importance (category A).
Furnishing
The 1st class salon for Schiller was designed by Robert Rittmeyer and Walter Furrer in the geometric Art Nouveau style. It is a rare example of this style and has been placed under monument protection by the Canton of Lucerne . For the first time, the constructive structure is consciously emphasized instead of concealing it. In 1986, the architect C. Kunz wrote in an essay about paddle steamers on Swiss lakes: "For the first time, passengers are given the feeling that they are not in a garden hall or in a restaurant, but on a ship." The furniture has been preserved in its original state. For furnishing precious materials have been used, including lemon wood with inlays in ebony and mother of pearl . The equipment details include an ebony silhouette by Friedrich Schiller and vignettes with animals, mermaids and nautical motifs. Bugzier is the Swiss cross .
In 2001 the renovation of the Schiller , in particular the restoration of the 1st class salon, received a special award from ICOMOS Suisse .
commitment
The Schiller is used for both scheduled and charter trips. As of the end of the 2010 season, she had covered 1,359,105 km. Prominent passengers on the Schiller in 1917 were Albrecht Herzog von Württemberg together with interned soldiers on the occasion of an inspection tour, on the national holiday in 1991 the entire Swiss Federal Council and on September 22, 2009 on the occasion of a state visit by Russian President Dmitri Medvedev . On September 27, 1986 Schiller was featured in the television program Wetten, dass ..? seen being pulled 30 meters by members of a rowing club.
Incidents
On September 7, 1969, the ship ran aground near Buochs on a sandbank . Nauen were used to rescue the passengers . The next day the Schiller was successfully towed away by the paddle steamer Wilhelm Tell . She suffered no damage in the incident. On August 19, 2016, the Unterwalden collided with the Schiller . No people were harmed. The stern of the Schiller was damaged, but after an emergency repair it was able to resume service on the course the following day.
