Acheregg
The Acheregg is a place or the riverside area at the eastern end of the Loppers ridge , west of Stansstad in the canton of Nidwalden . Acher is Swiss German for Acker , the part of the name Egg comes from Ecke . Here is the narrow lake that separates Lake Alpnach from the rest of Lake Lucerne . In the early Middle Ages, the Acheregg was an almost insurmountable obstacle on the way from Lucerne to Stans .
Historic Acheregg bridges
An Acheregg bridge built in the 12th century disappeared again. Only in 1860 was a stone bridge built to the new riverside road between Alpnach and Hergiswil . A drawbridge was built into the structure so that steamships could still pass through the Alpnachersee . This was replaced by a swing bridge in 1887 , which made it possible to widen the opening for the ships to 18 meters. In 1914 a new swing bridge was built, in which the rotating bridge part could now be rotated to the side by motor instead of by hand and which could also carry heavier vehicles. Nevertheless, especially in the context of increasing motorization in the post-war period, longer and longer traffic jams arose when the bridge had to be opened.
Today's bridges
Two bridges, close to each other, span the narrow sea. Firstly, the bridge over the A2 motorway . On the other hand, the bridge built between 1961 and 1964 with the railroad track of the Lucerne-Stans-Engelberg-Bahn , Kantonsstrasse 4 and a sidewalk. This 200-meter-long and 16.4-meter-wide bridge consists of a tanner girder system made up of five fields. The bridge, which is placed on four by two pillars, is fully prestressed in the longitudinal direction. The bridge will be renovated and reinforced from 2015 to 2016.
Every day around 40,000 vehicles pass the A2 bridge and around 6,700 vehicles cross the canton road bridge.
Only the specially equipped steamship Unterwalden and some motor ships from the Vierwaldstättersee shipping company can pass under the bridges and drive into the Alpnachersee by either pulling in or folding down their chimney and wheelhouse or mast.
