Christopher Nupen

Christopher Nupen (* in South Africa ) is a South African film producer and director based in England.

Nupen came to England at the age of 19, where he soon developed into a specialist in documentaries about musicians and composers. After working for the BBC , he founded Allegro Films in 1968 , which became the most important English producer of musical films for television, later also for video and DVD.

Nupen's best-known television production was The Trout with musicians Daniel Barenboim , Itzhak Perlman , Pinchas Zukerman , Jacqueline du Pré and Zubin Mehta . He shot portraits of composers such as Franz Schubert , Georges Bizet , Modest Mussorgski , Peter Tschaikovski , Jean Sibelius , Johannes Brahms and Arnold Schönberg and of interpreters such as Jacqueline du Pré, Andrés Segovia , Wladimir Aschkenasi and Astor Piazzolla . He also documented a concert by the British progressive rock band Gentle Giant (1974) for ZDF .

At the Cannes International Film Festival , three of his films were named DVD of the year in the documentary category: Jacqueline du Pré in Portrait (2005), We Want the Light (2006) and Jacqueline du Pré: A Celebration (2008).
