Pinchas Zukerman ( Hebrew פנחס צוקרמן, pinˈχaːs ˈtsukeʁman , born July 16, 1948 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli violinist , violist and conductor .

Life

Pinchas Zukerman's family survived the Warsaw ghetto and the Auschwitz concentration camp . He received clarinet lessons from his father, Yehuda Zukerman , before he found the violin at the age of eight . First he was trained at the Israeli Conservatory in Tel Aviv. An American-Israeli foundation made it possible for him to continue his education at the Music Academy in Tel Aviv. He studied with Ilona Fehér. In 1961 he met Pablo Casals and Isaac Stern during the first Israel Festival . On her advice, he went to New York City in 1962 to study with Ivan Galamian at the Juilliard School of Music . Zukerman made his debut in New York in 1963.

In 1967 he was co-winner of the Leventritt International Competition together with the Korean violinist Kyung Wha Chung . In 1969 he made his debut in Europe. From then on, his international career as a violinist and violist took off sharply, and from 1971 also as a conductor, especially with the English Chamber Orchestra . In 1977 he played the violin concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim .

From 1980 to 1987, Zukerman was the conductor of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra . From 1998 to 2015 he was chief conductor of the National Arts Center Orchestra in Ottawa.

His joint appearances with the violinist Itzhak Perlman became known , as well as various chamber music recordings such as B. the piano trios by Franz Schubert with the pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy and the cellist Lynn Harrell . A close and very long friendship and musical relationship connects Zukerman with the conductor and pianist Daniel Barenboim , which led to numerous joint recordings and concerts.

He also worked in the film adaptation of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's detective novel The Judge and His Executioner , in which he played the violinist in Gastmann's house.

Private

Zukerman was married from 1968 to 1985 in his first marriage to the American flautist Eugenia Rich Zukerman, in his second marriage from 1985 to 1998 with the actress Tuesday Weld . He has lived in his third marriage with the Canadian cellist Amanda Forsyth since 2004 .
