Life

Raimund Waschle grew up in Ravensburg ; his father was the local politician and mayor Karl Waschle , his mother a pianist and piano teacher. From 1977 to 1983 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Professors Moritz Baumgartl and Rudolf Schoofs . In 1980 he received the Deutsche Leasing AG prize , “Graphics of our time”, Frankfurt, and in 1987 the “Upper Swabian Art Prize” from OEW Biberach; 2004 the "Art Scholarship of the Fine Arts Department" of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts .

Artistic creation

With photo documents from the National Socialist extermination camps, Raimund Waschle found his subject. When exploring human abysses, the expressionist Max Beckmann was a role model for him. The writer Peter Renz said of "Leaves on Wrapping Paper" from 1994 that they had an overwhelming clarity: "Despite all the gloom, they retain a warm, almost encouraging aura in their enigmatic archaism ."

Raimund Waschle devoted himself particularly intensively to the art of etching . His academy teacher Rudolf Schoofs encouraged him to “explore the still hidden, unexplored possibilities that lie in this printing technique that has been handed down over the years”, stated the pedagogue Anton Schmid. In the 80s, the first large series of etchings was created around the Holocaust . In the 1990s, Waschle used images of pathological changes and injuries from medical literature as templates. The etching series Moulage from 2002 deals with the repulsive appearance of skin diseases. In the etching series Shunt (weiche, deviation) from 2003/2004, Waschle consciously uses his own work as a picture archive and template. Through the use of symbols of salvation, he anchored his work in tradition: “Via crucis”, the Way of the Cross, is the name of an etching series from 2005. In addition to the Christian, older, pagan traditions from Africa and Oceania play a role in his work.

Peter Renz concluded, "Raimund Wäschles not easily consumable art of pain and threatened existence ... shows up as an art of responding to a Predefined ... A desperate, speechlessness abgerungener dialogue." The culture journalist Birgit Kölgen certify the often melancholy -soaked figures of Artist “something floating, light, yes, elegant, almost like Asian ink marks ”.
