history

The Gallus Chapel is the only motorway chapel in the Württemberg part of Baden-Württemberg . In 1997 the Friends of the Galluskapelle Winterberg e. V. founded and in July 2000 the consecration of the Gallus Chapel took place after two years of construction. The chapel was planned and designed by the architect and former mayor of Leutkirch Georg Zimmer. The architect Georg Heinz from Adrazhofen and the technical site manager Anton Bodenmüller from Tautenhofen had the planning and construction management .

Buildings and equipment

Early Christian churches were often in the shape of a rotunda. Monks from Ireland evangelized the Allgäu between the sixth and eighth centuries . The sacred rotunda with a diameter of ten meters is intended to be a meeting place for travelers, locals, Christians of different denominations, young and old. A star-shaped wooden roof is supported by eight pillars over a plastered wall ring. The room is also illuminated via a strip of windows running underneath. A central glass lantern with a cross and a ball replace the church tower.

Circumferential round benches and interior floor made of local oak , book of concerns, letter stands, and sacrificial candlesticks form the equipment of the chapel. Hubert Kaltenmarkt from Kressbronn designed the interior. A crucifix hangs over a circular surface made of olive wood. The square, reddish granite block used as an altar table comes from Ireland.

Gallus, Magnus and Columban

Outside the chapel, the Allgäu people Gallus , Magnus and Columban are shown in a bronze sculpture by the Aachen artist Bonifatius Stirnberg . Gallus, who is shown with a bear, is considered the missionary of the Allgäu. Magnus with the dragon at his side, laid the swamps dry and Columban as the third in the league is represented with the sun, the sign of enlightenment.

reachability

The chapel is located on the 745 meter high Winterberg near the Leutkirch district of Tautenhofen . It can be reached from the Winterberg rest area on the A 96 in the direction of Lindau .
