Joshua Weilerstein (* 1987 in Rochester (New York) ) is an American violinist and conductor . He is Artistic Director of the Orchester de Chambre de Lausanne and Deputy Director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra .

Life

Weilerstein's parents are the first violinist of the “Cleveland Quartet” Donald Weilerstein and the pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein. His sister is the cellist Alisa Weilerstein, born in 1982 . Joshua Weilerstein studied orchestral conducting with Hugh Wolff at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and violin playing with Lucy Chapman . In 2011 he obtained a Master of Music . Weilerstein attended master classes with David Zinman at the Aspen Music Festival, among others . In 2007, Weilerstein was invited by Gustavo Dudamel to be the first non- Venezuelan guest member of the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Juventud Venezolana to play Simón Bolívar on a tour through America as a first violinist.

In 2009 he made his debut as a conductor with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra . In 2010 he conducted the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Juventud Venezolana Simón Bolívar for the first time, with his sister Alisa Weilerstein playing the cello as a soloist .

In 2011, Joshua Weilerstein and Case Scaglione were appointed deputy directors of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra . He is currently the artistic director and conductor of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra.

Weilerstein is the author and speaker of the podcast "Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast".
