Alisa Weilerstein (born April 14, 1982 in Rochester , New York ) is an American cellist .

Musical career

Weilerstein started playing the cello at the age of four. She was trained at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the Young Artist Program . She made Weilerstein's public debut at the age of 13 with the Cleveland Orchestra and Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33 . She first performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City when she was 15 . Since then, Weilerstein has played with several large orchestras on four continents.

With her parents, the first violinist of the Cleveland Quartet Donald Weilerstein and the pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein, she performs as the Weilerstein Trio. The trio lived at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston in 2010 . Her brother is the violinist and conductor Joshua Weilerstein, born in 1987 .

In collaboration with various contemporary composers , Weilerstein played the cello at various premieres. For example, on the occasion of the premiere of Osvaldo Golijov's Cello Concerto Azul and at the world premiere of Lera Auerbach's 24 Preludes for Cello and Piano . She also took part in the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival with Auerbach's transcription of Shostakovich's op. 34 for cello and piano . The world premiere of Joseph Hallman's Cello Concerto took place together with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic and Jeffery Meyer as conductor.

In October 2010, Weilerstein occurred in the Alte Oper in Frankfurt with the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B Minor, Op. 104 by Antonín Dvořák on. As Artist in Residence , she played the Cello Concerto in C major by Joseph Haydn at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden in August 2011 at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony under Paavo Järvi at the Rheingau Music Festival .

In 2004 Weilerstein completed her studies in Russia at Columbia University in New York with a BA .

Weilerstein plays a cello made by the London instrument maker William Forster in 1790.
