Thorsten Encke

Thorsten Encke (born January 24, 1966 in Göttingen ) is a German cellist , composer , conductor .
Life
Thorsten Encke, born in Göttingen in 1966 , studied violoncello and conducting with Friedrich-Jürgen Sellheim at the University of Music and Theater in Hanover and with Lynn Harrell at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in the USA . For the concert exam Thorsten Encke played Witold Lutosławski's cello concerto together with the NDR Radiophilharmonie . After graduating with the concert exam in 1995 and successes in various international competitions, Encke received a teaching position at the Hanover University of Music and Theater. He then got an engagement in Gera as first solo cellist in the local Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1999 he quit this position to work as a freelance musician.
In April 2005, Encke won the composition competition at the Pablo Casals Festival in Prades .
In 2011 Thorsten Encke co-founded the orchestra musica assoluta , which he has led as conductor and artistic director ever since. Clarinetist Sharon Kam was a guest there as a soloist.
In 2012, Encke was Composer in Residence at the Tension Festival in Heimbach . His work Preludes was premiered during this festival . Christian Tetzlaff , Volker Jacobsen, Gustav Rivinius , Edicson Ruiz , Sharon Kam, Isahy Lantner, Stefan Rapp and Lauma Skride played under Encke's direction .
On behalf of Norddeutscher Rundfunk , Encke composed the concerto for clarinet and orchestra (2018) , which Sharon Kam premiered as a soloist with the NDR Radiophilharmonie under the baton of Joshua Weilerstein in early January 2019 at the Landesfunkhaus Niedersachsen in Hanover.
