Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra , abbreviated BSO , is a large symphony orchestra of the United States of America . The orchestra, founded in 1916, is based in Baltimore , Maryland .
In particular, from 1985 to 1998 under David Zinman as music director, the Baltimore Symphony achieved an international reputation. It was during this phase that he won the 1990 Grammy Award for a recording of works for cello and orchestra by Barber and Britten with Yo-Yo Ma as “Best Solo Instrument Performance with Orchestra”. In 2007/2008 Marin Alsop took over the leadership of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, making it the first woman in history to head a large US orchestra.
