Yuri Chatujewitsch Temirkanow ( Russian Ю́рий Хату́евич Темирка́нов ; born December 10, 1938 in Nalchik , then Kabardino-Balkarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic , Soviet Union ) is a Russian conductor .

Life

Temirkanov was born into a family belonging to the Kabardine ethnic group. He completed his studies in viola and conducting at the St. Petersburg Conservatory , where he was trained as a conductor by Ilja Musin .

Yuri Temirkanov has been Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic since 1988 .

After winning the Soviet National Conducting Competition in 1966, Kirill Kondrashin invited him to tour Europe and the United States with Dawid Oistrach and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra . He made his debut as conductor of the Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) Philharmonic Orchestra in 1967 and then became assistant to chief conductor Yevgeny Maravinsky . From 1968 to 1976 Yuri Temirkanov was chief conductor of the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra, from 1976 to 1988 music director of the Kirov Theaters and Ballets (today: Mariinsky Theater ). Temirkanow worked a. a. with the Berlin Philharmonic , the Vienna Philharmonic , the Staatskapelle Dresden , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the London Symphony Orchestra , the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest and the Orchestra of La Scala in Milan . In 1977 he became principal guest conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra , from 1992 to 1998 he was chief conductor of this British orchestra, from 1992 to 1997 also principal guest conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic and from 1998 to 2008 principal guest conductor of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra . From 2000 to 2006 he was music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra , principal guest conductor of the Bolshoi Theater until 2009 and music director of the Teatro Regio di Parma from 2010 to 2012 . Juri Temirkanow's discography is extensive and includes a. Recordings with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic , the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
