James Cohn

James Cohn (born February 12, 1928 in Newark , New Jersey ) is an American composer .

Cohn had violin and piano lessons in his hometown, was a student of Roy Harris , Wayne Barlow and Bernard Wagenaar and graduated in 1950 with a degree in composition from the Juilliard School . He composed solo and orchestral works, choral works and chamber music, including the opera The Fall of the City , eight symphonies, five piano sonatas and three string quartets, as well as commissioned works for film and television.

In 1953 he received a prize at the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth for his Second Symphony, which was premiered in Brussels . The Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Paul Paray premiered its Third Symphony and the Variations on The Wayfaring Stranger . He received composition commissions a. a. by the clarinetists Jon Manasse and Christopher Jepperson, the trumpeter Jeffrey Silberschlag, the Belgian clarinet ensemble Claribel and The McKim Fund of the Library of Congress . More recently, Cohn has composed a piano concerto for the Argentine pianist Mirian Conti, 3 Dances for clarinet and guitar for Raphael Sanders and David Galvez, and a Duo for Clarinet & Violin for Julianne Kirk and Adda Kridler.
