Marcel Poot (born May 7, 1901 in Vilvoorde , † June 12, 1988 in Ixelles / Elsene (Brussels)) was a Belgian composer .

Life

Marcel Poot, son of Jan Poot, director of the Vlaamse Schouwburg , the Flemish Theater in Brussels , studied organ at the Brussels Conservatory with Gerard Nauwelaarts , composition and instrumentation with Arthur De Greef , José Sevenans , Martin Lunssens , Lodewijk Mortelmans , and at the Conservatory in Antwerp . He was a private student of composition with Paul Gilson . He also studied with Paul Dukas at the École Normale de Musique de Paris .

After completing his studies, he was initially a music teacher, music reviewer and freelance composer. In 1925 he founded the group Les Synthétistes with individual former students of Gilson . Similar to the Russian group of five and in France the Groupe des Six , such a group should also establish itself in Belgium and exert a corresponding influence on art and musical life. The aim of this group was to join forces in order to counter the conservative musical life with well-founded contemporary works. Other members of this group were: René Bernier , Francis de Bourguignon , Théo de Joncker , Maurice Schoemaker , Jules Strens and Robert Otlet . With his Vrolijke Ouverture (Merry Overture) , composed in 1934 and dedicated to Paul Dukas , he spontaneously became known beyond the borders of Belgium .

Poot was also active as a publicist for 15 years, he was with Paul Gilson co-founder and editor of La Revue Musicale Belgium and music editor of the daily newspaper Le Peuple .

From 1939 he was a lecturer and professor for counterpoint and harmony at the Conservatory in Brussels, and in 1949 he succeeded Léon Jongen as director. He held this office until 1966.

Poot founded the Union of Belgian Composers in 1960 and was the first to chair it. At the International Queen Elisabeth Competition he was chairman of the jury from 1963 to 1980 and wrote several commissioned works for the competition. From 1969 to 1976 he was rector of the elite boarding school for young musicians, the Chapelle Musicale Elisabeth . He was a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Arts of Belgium .
