Valery Pavlovich Afanassjew ( Russian Валерий Павлович Афанасьев ; born September 8, 1947 in Moscow ) is a Russian pianist .

Life

Valeri Afanassjew was trained at the Moscow Conservatory by Emil Gilels . In 1968 he was first prize winner at the Bach Competition in Leipzig and three years later at the Concours Reine Elisabeth in Brussels .
In 1974 Afanassjew left the Soviet Union and settled in Belgium, he lived in Versailles near Paris and since 2016 in Belgium again.
In addition to his musical activities, Afanassjew is also the author of novels.

Afanassjew first made a name for himself in Germany as a partner of Gidon Kremer in chamber music performances. His interpretations of works by Franz Schubert , Ludwig van Beethoven and others are considered unusual and idiosyncratic due to their intense will to express themselves.
