history

Numerous archaeological finds attest to ancient settlements of the Villanova culture and the Romans . The eponymous Castel San Pietro was built in 1199 . After the Battle of Legnano, the government of Bologna had castles built in various places in its territory, including those near Castel San Pietro Terme. On the formwork you can still read today that the Podestà of Bologna ordered the construction of this castle in the area [of Bologna] in order to maintain the peace .

Wars and occupations have shaped Castel San Pietro Terme since the years of its foundation. Only in the 14th century did calm return when the city was the seat of the university twice, in 1306 and 1338, the last time when Bologna was excommunicated by the Pope. In 1410 the antipope John XXIII fled . to Castel San Pietro Terme before the plague that struck Bologna. Four years later Braccio da Montone invaded the town and destroyed it, in 1421 it was conquered by Angelo della Pergola. In 1428 the general Angelo Roncone was sent from Bologna with the order to conquer the city, but he failed because of the walls of the castle. In 1501 Castel San Pietro Terme was sacked by Cesare Borgia , in 1505 Pope Julius II's troops marched through the village; a few years later she was taken by the army of Charles III. de Bourbon-Montpensier devastated on their way to Rome. The passage of various armies remained a recurring theme until the 17th century and put a great strain on the already exhausted city.

Then came the French Revolution : on June 22nd, 1796, the Tree of Liberty was erected on the city's main square. Germans and French raged alternately in the village, depending on who had the upper hand. In the Risorgimento , Castel San Pietro contributed its share to the Italian struggle for independence. During the Second World War , Castel San Pietro was involved in the fight against the Goths , was half destroyed by German troops and contributed to the resistance struggle in Italy with high blood toll.
