geography

Monterenzio

The municipality is located halfway between the Idice and Sillaro streams and is the eastern mountain part of the diocese of Bologna . The eleven agricultural units that make up the area date from pre- Napoleonic times. The Flaminia Minore state road runs over the ridge and forms the watershed and the historical and cultural border between Emilia and Romagna . The main town is 34 km south of Bologna , on the right bank of the river Idice and down the valley to the district of Monterenzio, from which the municipality name comes. In the past, the seat of the municipal administration was in Villa di Cassano and Ca 'di Lavacchio , then in Fiumetto from 1880 and finally from 1934 in the current location.

history

It is believed that today's municipality of Monterenzio with the Monte Russi , which was in a placitum of Otto III. Was mentioned in 998. In any case, the mention of a castrum ... qui dicitur Renzuli (fortress called Renzuli), mentioned in a transaction from 1034. The first settlements date from the Villanovian times, as is shown by the finds near Pizzano.

One from the 4th century BC is remarkable. Etruscan-Celtic settlement, which was found around 15 years ago at Pianella di Monte Savino, which is still an excavation site today. A large basin for water collection ( cistern ) was exposed, certainly for public use. The largest area of expansion of the settlement should be on the 3rd century BC. BC, while later urban sprawl as a result of the Romanization of the area can be proven.

A wide necropolis was found on the top of Monte Tamburino. As for the medieval settlements, these are mainly in the areas around Cassano and Bisano, which are characterized by sandy areas with greater stability and better rock characteristics. These fold southward into mountain slopes and form mostly leafy clay-like rock faces. The community is also very remarkable from a scenic point of view.

From the Dragone , near the parish of Sassuno, which the historian Calindri describes in detail, you can enjoy a beautiful view. The state road leads to the mountain where the Rocca di Malaspina ( Malaspina Castle) towered high in ancient times , which is mentioned in documents from 1288 as the seat of a podestà and an annual market. On the ridge, on the other hand, is the main town of the municipality, Monterenzio, where the torre (tower) is located, which Calindri converted into a farm as a remnant of an ancient tower with a width of 20 Bolognese square feet and wide formwork.

The features of the building make it similar to a Casatorre , which has notable architectural and structural features. On the facade there are three portals set up one below the other, one for each floor. Also noticeable are hollow, narrower windows, which are characterized by a conical seam.

Inside the building, the main yoke catches the main beam, a typical style element of the architecture of this epoch. In the village of Scaruglio there was the church of S.Andrea di Scoveto , which was mentioned in the records of harvest taxes from 1300. It is believed that the Monterenzio market took place on St Andrea's Day, as prescribed by the Bologna statutes of 1288.

Near the parish church, on the hill called Catellaccio , there was a castle that was mentioned in 1297 when the administration of Bologna at that time fortified it. The town center has various remarkable buildings from the 14th or 15th centuries.
