Monte San Pietro is an Italian municipality with 10,795 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bologna . The main town of the municipality is the village of the same name, although the most populated industrial town is Calderino .

Municipal area

The municipality has a wide area, which includes the middle and high catchment area of the Lavino water stream. Because of its distribution and morphological diversity, there has been a strong heterogeneity in the socio-economic development of all the communities present. In Calderino all social, political, official and partly also industrial activities have been brought together, while historically important places such as Gavignano or Vignola dei Conti are now almost forgotten.

Attractions

Overall, Monte San Pietro offers a remarkable number of ancient testimonies. In the village of Amola you can find one of the most delicious gems of Bolognese art: the Via Crucis (= Way of the Cross) by Mauro Gandolfi , which is kept in the parish church from the 17th century near Amola di Monte. In Monte San Giovanni the church, the villa and the Castagneto (= sweet chestnut grove) are worth a visit.

The now private monastery complex of Badia ( it. For abbey), which was an important junction in the Via Nonantolana in the early Middle Ages, is worth seeing .

In Mongiorgio you can visit the ruins of an old castle (10th / 11th centuries), inside of which there is the church of S. Sigmund and S. Peter from the 17th century.

In Via Lavino, in the direction of Montepastore, you go through Gavignano, an old farming village with a church and a tower. In San Chierlo you can see the Torre del Paleotto (= Tower of the Paleotto).

The altarpiece in the Romanesque church, which was renovated at the end of the 15th century, is remarkable.

Once a year in the wayside shrine of San Lorenzo in Collina you can admire the privately owned Madonna del Castello di Capromazza, a polychrome sculpture made of wood from the 15th century.

Finally, the church of San Martino in Casola , which keeps ecclesiastical furnishings and objects from the 17th to the 18th centuries, is worth seeing .

A 16th century organ was found in the church of Monte San Giovanni.
