Anzola dell'Emilia is an Italian municipality with 12,389 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Bologna .

Municipal area

The municipality of Anzola dell'Emilia is bounded on the east by the course of the Lavino river and on the west by that of Samoggia . The Martignone and Ghironda also flow through the municipality . The Emilian municipality is almost halfway between the cities of Bologna and Modena . More precisely, it borders indirectly on the municipality of Bologna in the east and is about 15 km from the city center. Anzola is a major industrial and agricultural center along State Road 9 , an important local artery. Various mechanical trades can be found there, especially in the Lavino di Mezzo district.

history

Thanks to its lush geographical position, the area was already in the Neolithic and then by the Terramare community , whose numerous archaeological finds have recently been uncovered. Other excavations brought to light Villaniovian and Etruscan finds.

The Roman settlement and its attested finds are mentioned by some writers, such as Polybios and Pomponius Mela , although the first documents date back to the year 888 and refer to the Benedictine monastery (since 1250 Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria in Strada ) together with the current parish church, which known today as Casale Marzano .

In the first centuries of the 2nd millennium, the municipality of Bologna annexed the municipality of Anzola against the will of the Church , as in 1157 Rinaldino of Unciola (the old name for Anzola, which is derived from oncia (ounce)), who was allied with Cattaneo of Monteveglio who betrayed the diocese and offered it to her. However, he was exposed and then executed. The Roman-German Emperor Friedrich II made amends in 1220, but in 1231 Bologna seized the castle and annoyed Pope Gregorius IX. considerable.

Anzola also took part in the battle alongside the Lega Lombarda, along with Bologna , which, on the orders of Count Michele degli Orsi, defeated the imperial forces at the Battle of Fossalta near Modena in 1249. Prince Heinz , King of Sardinia and son of Emperor Frederick II, was captured by three Bolognese, including Michele degli Orsi, and Heinz spent a few days in the castle of Anzola before he was brought to Bologna.

There was a survey between 1274 and 1278 because the residents of Anzola refused to pay taxes. This dispute was resolved in 1289 with an agreement between the bishop and the inhabitants of Anzola.

In the 15th century Anzola experienced first riots between the Guelphs and Ghibellines and then wars against the Viscontis . In 1600 the castle of Anzola, which had survived these numerous conflicts, was finally destroyed and the parish church was rebuilt a few years later. In 1643 Anzola also suffered the agony of the plague, the Odoardo I Farnese , the Duke of Parma , who refuted Pope Urbanus VII .

With the takeover of Napoleon at the beginning of the 19th century, the municipality of Anzola was established and the first seat took place on April 23, 1804. In addition, the registry office, the public school system, the national guard and compulsory military service were introduced. The collection against the meal tax in 1869, the demonstration against the evictions in 1906 and the experiences of the first cooperatives are worth mentioning .
