Santa Maria in Strada Monastery was a Cistercian abbey in Emilia-Romagna , Italy . It was located 17 km northwest of Bologna about one kilometer north of the Via Emilia leading to Modena , near Ponte Salmoggia in the municipality of Anzola dell'Emilia .
history
The Benedictine abbey was founded in 994 by the Bolognese nobleman Bernadino Boccaferro and was subsequently a Camaldolese monastery . In 1250, a convent from the Chiaravalle della Colomba monastery was sent to the monastery, which was probably in decline . Thus the monastery belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The further history of the abbey is largely in the dark. Bernardo Lamberteschi was abbot from 1323 to 1348. In 1364 the monks are said to have moved to the city of Bologna to the church of Santa Maria di Borgo degli Argenti, which was given the name of San Bernardo. The monastery fell in 1463 in Kommende , was probably abandoned immediately afterwards and no longer appears among the abbeys that belonged to the Italian Cistercian congregation when it was founded in 1497. San Bernardo is also said to have been abandoned in 1510. The monastery of Santa Maria in Strada fell into disrepair and was later taken over by the Collego Montalto in Bologna, while Olivetan monks moved into San Bernardo until the monastery was closed in 1797 and converted into apartments.
Plant and buildings
The monastery was built from 1252. A bell tower is said to have been preserved from him. At the site of the monastery is the small church of Santa Maria in Strada and the younger parish church of the same name.
