Grizzana Morandi is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Bologna with 3892 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on an area of 77 km².
location
The municipality includes the hilly area that is split by the Setta Valley and the Reno Valley. The artistic and historical importance is considerable in the western part of the area and in the municipality capital. There you can still visit the house of the famous painter Giorgio Morandi , which now houses a museum. The eastern part has gained in importance after the construction of the state road 325 and the train station at Piandisetta .
history
From various archaeological finds it is concluded that the first settlers were the Etruscans . Then came the Ligurians and the Celts and finally the Romans .
Different powers ruled in the Middle Ages. In this country, feudal families from Bologna and Tuscany alternated, other noble families of lower rank, bishops and religious orders. The history of this area was an alternating history of seizures of power, inheritances and divisions, until Napoleon enforced the design of the area, which - apart from minor changes - was retained during the restoration . The current delimitation was finally recognized with the unification of Italy in 1861 .
It is also worth mentioning the uprising of the people, first against the French government, then against the Austrian , finally again against France, which was called Brigantaggio (Organized Crime). Today, however, these uprisings are regarded as the beginning of the movements within the framework of the Risorgimentos .
Attractions
The entire municipality offers many sights. These include various remote medieval hamlets and villages, old churches and towers from the modern era, and individual buildings, as well as the landscape itself. Giorgio Morandi depicted these landscapes in his paintings.
The Centro Morandi was founded in the municipality's capital, a documentation center located in the town hall and which, from a didactic point of view, makes the cultural and natural preservation of the region its task. Not far from the center of Grizzana is the famous painter's house, which is also accessible to tourists.
The medieval hamlet
In the area between Monte Vigese and the Reno Valley, all the most important historical buildings in the area have been preserved in the medieval villages of Poggio , Sterpi , Predolo , Cà Brunetti and La Scola . In La Scola you can admire remarkable buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries , such as the Casa Montanelli , where interesting frescoes from the 16th century are kept, three towers, a wayside shrine from the 15th century and two houses of prayer.
On the top of Montovolo is the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Consolazione (Saint Mary of Consolation) with its Romanesque pit, the only original part, because the rest was restored and expanded in the 13th century .
In Savignano , in the south-west of the municipality of Grizzana Morandi, Rocchetta Mattei is particularly noteworthy for its shape and its contrast with the surrounding area. The Rocchetta is a 19th century castle, the construction of which was inspired by the example of medieval castles. Count Cesare Mattei had this castle built in a similar way to King Ludwig in Bavaria. Its towers even have domes that are reminiscent of those of the Frauenkirche in Munich .
